Garlic question

Another thread got me thinking about adding some garlic to Chloe's food. I live in southeastern Mass and ticks and Lyme disease are RAMPANT here! Three dogs I know near us have tested positive for Lyme in the past month and the vets here are really pushing the Lyme vaccine (I know, another thread entirely!).

Chloe gets Frontline Plus applied every month, but I know nothing is 100% effective. I searched the internet for garlic and dogs and of course had ten thousand links to look through!

So what works for you? Chloe is about 15 pounds, 9 months old. Do you use fresh garlic? Powder? And in what amounts? Thanks in advance for your responses!

Re: Garlic question

I use fresh garlic - about 1-2 cloves per week. I also add a tbls of Apple Cider Vinegar (the unfiltered kind) to their food everyday.

Do they eat the fresh garlic willingly? And, does it make their breath smell like garlic? Just wondering . I'm looking into this and the brewer's yeast. I was going to go with the pill form if I can find it. Any feedback on this?

Smile Re: Garlic question

Hi! I just wanted to let you know that I have 3 dogs. Stella (blenheim Cavalier King Charles Spaniel), Lucy (blk & wht Sheltie mix) and Desi (blond Shih-poo). All 3 get a garlic supplement for flea and tick control. I started using one when Stella showed a reaction to the chemicals from one of the popular topical brands. I order online from a company called "Springtime".
They also offer vitamin supp., and Joint supp., calming supp. etc. for dogs.
They offer supplements for horses, people and dogs. Great company! They have a website also. The garlic tablets are working! No fleas, ticks, and no
chemicals. They also have a garlic powder supplement. Please check them out! Good Luck!!

By the way, the website for Springtime is

www.springtimeinc.com

Check it out!

See my post above...The tablets do smell like garlic when you first take them out. Two of my dogs eat them like treats and the other one gets cream cheese with hers. Their breath smells like garlic only for a short while when they first get them. Hope this helps!

OH Yes. I mash it up real fine and usually mix it in with yogurt and a little bit of ACV. And no, I have never smelled garlic on their breath.
I don't have any experience with the pill form - I don't think they absorb enough as they would in it's natural form. This is JMO.

Re: Garlic question

Onions and garlic in sufficient quantities can be toxic to dogs. How do you know how much is safe?

That's why it's a good idea to start out small. Although it would be a first for me to hear that a dog is allergic to garlic.

1-2 cloves a week is pretty safe.

Re: Garlic question

My dogs will not eat fresh garlic, which is saying a LOT because my dogs will eat most things if you let them. I use garlic powder and apple cider vinegar instead.

Re: Garlic question

I would really like to try the garlic once I run out of Advantix...maybe even before then. Are there any links or anything with info on how much to feed a ~50lb dog per week? Or even per meal. I really don't have a clue lol.

Re: Garlic question

really? I thought garlic and onions were toxic to dogs. They were on the same list as chocolate.

Re: Garlic question

Keep in mind that even water can be toxic, if you drink too much.

I give our horse, pony, six dogs and kitten BugOff Garlic by Springtime Inc. every other day. They also get a splash of raw Apple Cider Vinegar or a few drops of Grapefruit Seed Extract in their water every other day.
