Over Feeding/ Under Feeding

I have a Jack russell that is right around 12 to 13 lbs. So I have asked the vet a million times what the average intake of food for a dog her size should be but I've never gotten a straight answer. At this point I have been giving her one and half to two cans of wet food a day which is about 1 cup and about 1 cup of dry kibble. Is this enough? She seems to get full but she will never turn down a treat or two. I just want to make sure she is getting enough but I dont want to over feed her either. I was hoping to see how much you guys feed your dogs?

Re: Over Feeding/ Under Feeding

How much you should feed is going to vary by the dog food and individual dogs (b/c of variences in things like activity level). I use the guidelines on the bag (or can if that's what you're using) to start out and slowly tweak the feed amount based on how the animal responds. I think most of the manufacturers' guidelines tend to overshoot rather than undershoot anyway.

My dog started gaining weight based on the recommended amount on the bag of EVO that I feed. So I gradually decreased the amount until I found the amount that maintains his weight perfectly so he's not gaining or losing. It takes a while (especially when mixing wet and dry) but eventually you'll figure out what works best for you and your dog.

And by gradually, since our husky's weight gain was so slow on the bag's feed recommendation it actually took us about 3 months to figure out the "perfect" ratio for him between the wet and dry. I don't switch his dry food very often since he has a very sensitive tummy, but I do rotate between 5 different canned food flavors, a different flavor every week (same brand though).
