Pig Hoof

I recently adopted a pit mix (my first dog) a friend who has two lab mixes came over and brought my dog a bag of smoked pig’s hoofs. It took him about three or so hours but he eventually finished one of them.

Two days later when I was picking up his feces in my yard I noticed that he had passed entire pieces of the hoof – they were roughly the size of marbles.

I am not sure if I should give him one of these again – I am assuming that it is very bad for their digestion?

If these are bad, what should I consider – I have heard rawhide is bad – for time consuming treats, should I just fill a cong with organic peanut butter?
Thanks

Re: Pig Hoof

Our dogs LOVE raw pigs feet from the grocery store. Good for their teeth and takes about 45 minutes to chew one, so it's a nice recreational bone. I don't like to give ANY kind of cooked (including smoked) bones. They tend to splinter and/or not digest well.

Hmm.. Normal Raw Pigs Feet? I thought something like this would only be fit for human consumption. I actually haven’t given him anything but dried food and some liver and milk bone treats. I'm reluctant to start giving him human food, and my Vet didn’t give me any advice in this regard.

Do you just open it from the package and give it to them?

Yep. Normal raw pigs feet. I prefer to buy them already cut in half length-wise otherwise it's a really big treat. Just give it to them straight from the package, raw. In this house, pigs feet are not considered 'human food'

With raw bones there can always be an adjustment period (soft stools) as their bodies get used to processing it. If you are going to give raw bone treats it's best if you can commit to giving them regularly. I know many people that give turkey necks 3-4 times a week to help keep teeth clean. They last longer if they're frozen when you give them.

We always give raw treats outside (mostly for the mess issue)...we don't feed table scraps or human food in the house, lest our dogs start thinking that they are entitled to anything we eat. But, giving them outside or in their dog bowl at meal time seems to avoid that.
