| Homecooked Dog/puppy food ..?? Our dogs seem to be doing very well on a homecooked diet - Protein rice and vegetables (we give vitamins too so make sure they get there daily requirements)..So this has me wondering
1)does anyone else here make there own dog food ?
2) what books or websites do you recommend for recipes ?
3)Do you home cook puppy food too?
4) How many dogs do you have and how often do you cook your food ??
BTW we have 6 dogs (3 puppies/10 to 13 weeks and 3 adults) all Boston Terriers |

| Re: Homecooked Dog/puppy food ..?? I kind of cook my dog's food. What I mean by that is, I buy a mix which consists of organic barley, alfalfa, and other herbs (like parsley, rosemary etc.) and add meat, 2 eggs, oil, an orange veggie, a green veggie, a red apple and blueberries. Then I mix it all together and bake into muffins. There's a puppy and adult dog formula. It's called Canine Life. I like it because I can change the meat, veggies and fruit with each batch as long as there's an orange and green veggie (such as sweet potato and green beans) and I can use beef, chicken, turkey, salmon, venison etc. I have one small dog so she gets 1 to 1.25 muffins per day and sometimes a raw beef bone or chicken neck. I'd go raw but this is the most convenient way of feeding her the next best thing and I like that it's fresh food that I'm giving her. I also give her an wild salmon oil capsule daily and a vitamin E capsule twice a week. I was giving her probiotics for a bit as she was on antibiotics. I think when you cook your own food, it's important to give your dog variety of meats and veggies to make sure he's getting enough nutrients and that he doesn't become allergic to a protein. I sometimes feed her Urban Wolf which is another mix but it's grain free. To this, I add meat, an egg and oil and just serve (the meat can be raw or lightly cooked). However, I like Canine Life because you can use raw meat and you use fresh fruits and veggies as opposed to dehydrated ones in Urban Wolf. |

| Re: Homecooked Dog/puppy food ..?? I have one permanent 45 pound pit bull and a rotating cast of rescues and fosters. we get meat from various sources. wholesale meat sellers, hunting, fishing, hispanic markets, and straight off the farm.
i'm currently looking into large reptile food retailers to see if I can get cheaper chickens and maybe some rabbit.
look up barf, look up prey model raw diet too.
and a book called "foods pets die for"
I do raw. meaning one night she'll have a quarter of a chicken, a beef liver and some tripe. next night she'll get pork ribs, a chicken wing, a whole egg and a half a cup of plain yogurt for a dessert.
but when we travel I mix up some ground beef, giblets, veggie patties, eggs and maybe some salmon and bake the mix like cookies. traveling with raw isn't a good idea.
cooked or raw it's better than forced cannibalism and diseased foodstuff...

I believe that home cooked food is the best thing for our dog. We fed him commercial food for quite some time, but we felt that he put on a lot of weight and had smelly pooh.
There is this book that I came across in the internet which could be useful. I posted it in the forum last time but for some reason I can't find it. Anyway here it is again. Which is better for your dog? - Commercial or home-made food |

| Re: Homecooked Dog/puppy food ..?? There is a web site balanceit.com that will give you the information needed to provide balanced home-cooked meals for your dog. |

I used a nutritionist because I think it is best if they balance the diet.
There aren't any books that I would recommend so far.
If I had a puppy, I would homecook for it if it was a small breed.
I think it would be way too much work to homecook for a larger breed dog (I couldn't imagine doing it for six) but I might try it.
I have one dog and cook either every few days or sometimes once a month. |

| Re: Homecooked Dog/puppy food ..?? I do home cooked for my one of my girls. The other is on raw. She does extremely well on a home cooked diet. I follow Monica Segal's diet plans and belong to her email group on yahoo called k9kitchen. Her coat is gorgeous and I often get comments on how shiney she is.
When i'm making my batches I typically do lean ground beef, ground chicken, ground turkey if I can find it at a reasonable price or even ground lamb. I add brown and white rice, whatever vegetables I have at the time, and supplements bone meal, kelp, flax seed oil, cod liver oil, and a few others. I do up large batches and freeze them into 2 day portions or so. It ends up being like a meat loaf. She loves it and i've been very pleased with how she does on it. Totally worth it to me! |
