Question Which Dog food should we go with..

Ok a little backround we have all boston terriers

sass 4yrs
indy 3yrs
lucy 2yrs

rosie 13wks
rubie 13wks
max 10wks

So I had them all on Nutro Ultra but when Rosie fell and was put on anti-inflammatory drugs for a few days it upset her bowls really bad (very loose stool and blood in the stool) the blood has almost went away on a bland homecooked diet but I cannot cook for all my dogs all the time..So I am trying to find a good kibble for them..

Options are (these are all 5lb bags I purchased..I just don't know what to go with)

Orijen (like this one but I would have to by 2 seperate formulas or could I feed them all the puppy or adult the 2 formulas look the same ?)

Taste of the wild - (I have the 5lb bag of the prairie version and this is a all stage dog food so that would help)I haven't opened the bag to try it yet

Innova Evo - tried the dogs on this they like the taste but again I have to buy a puppy and adult formula..and alot of people say it is too rich for the puppies

Wellness Core - again I have to buy puppy and adult formula..kinda afraid to open it since my dogs didn't like the lower grade wellness foods

Nature variety Instinct - I have the duck and turkey variety I really like that it is an all stages formula,But I haven't opened the bag yet to try it

So any Input would be great I really don't know what to go with and I can't keep changing there food to try them all (esp with Rosie haveing the blood and loose stool )

I've heard good things about Orijen, but I haven't tried it myself. I have tried Taste of the Wild, and I was happy with it. And, because it's an all life stages formula, that would simplify matters for you, too. I'd try that one first.

wow you have six dogs, must be hard to take care of those 3 puppies. Canidae has good review and its is all life stage so you dont have to buy different stage of food. If you do not like Canidae i would go for taste of the wild. fyi canidae is much cheaper in price then the other brands.

Canidae does not work for all dogs, some cannot tolerate it. I've read about people feeding their dogs Orijen or Taste of the Wild and their dogs are doing okay. I agree EVO can be too rich. I feed Innova to my dogs and all are doing well.

What is the problem of feeding puppy food to the puppies? It's only for several months.

To make things easier for Rosie, how about feeding her canned I/D (very bland diet) until she gets over her tummy upsets.

agree, but not just canidae does not work for all dogs. All dog food does not work for all dog, every dog is different and have different reaction. So you would need to try alot of food until you find one you dog will like. I think that you buying all those different kind of food is a good thing. Just feed them all to the dog and see if they do well on and or like it. Thats the only way yull find out what they like or agree with.

Im only give my opinion on Canidae, that what i use and that is what alot of member use on this forum and it works for them.

Re: Which Dog food should we go with..

Yes we have 6 dogs ..really it isn't that hard with 3 puppies (we are a very experienced dog family).

So what I did yesturday was I made a bland homemade diet
Turkey(ground) brown rice carrots potatoes.I witheld food from Rosie for 24hours to give her stomach time to calm down.I have given Rosie just the turkey homemade food and will keep doing this for 48hours.They I will gradually start mixing the kibble food in her food.

Max and rubie I started mixing a small amount of kibble in the homemade I guess we will see how it goes.

I am going to try the Orijen first since it is open ..If it is too rich for the puppies still after a week or so.. I will try them with the TOTW food

If you want a high protein food like EVO try Blue Buffalo Wilderness. 6 star rated by dogfoodanalysis.com and you can get it at Petsmart.

Re: Which Dog food should we go with..

I thought about the blue buffalo ...But I think I am going to try out the Orijen with the adults and the TOTW with the puppies (since it has a lower calcium and protien)

Re: Which Dog food should we go with..

Caution: I know several people that were feeding their dog/dog(s) the same nutro as well, others were feeding the other varieties of Nutro and found that the dog food was causing diarreha and sometimes bloody stools. I also read of accounts of this on another threads in this forum.

I too have six dogs (2 puppies included) I feed my dogs canidae and use the regular ALS formula. But Canidae does have two other formulas for sensitive dogs, that possibly your dogs may prefer, a Lamb and Rice, as well as Chicken and Rice. Your call on wether to give the other formulas a try, all 3 are ALS... All Life Stages.

But as many have said some dog don't like certain blends. Cost wise if you check out their website they have a multiple pet redemption(sounds like you may qualify) program that is open to people with multiple dogs or cats (three or more) and are actively involved in dog/cat activities such as performance, conformation, breeding, training or rescue. Canidae was not a brand that was involved in the recall this last year.

Re: Which Dog food should we go with..

I think Rosies bloody stool was more because they had her on anti-inflamitory meds for 3 days (her bowel were fine before that) so far they have been doing good on the TOWT mixed a little bit with there homemade bland diet and they seem to be doing good.So i think I will just keep gradually adding and see how it goes.I don't mind cooking for them but it is time consumeing when you have 3 young kids and 6 dogs

Only thing I can add is that I don't know about "regular" Wellness, but my dog is on Wellness CORE Ocean formula and he does really well on it. So I wouldn't discount it without trying it....I mean unless you already found one that works and then you don't need to. Good luck!
