| What Do You Feed & Why + Best Foods I'm just a little curious here.
Well I guess we could say I'm a total geek when it comes to companion animal nutrition, perhaps a little too giddy at times.
I'm not looking for a debate to arise, just looking for a general consensus of the pet owners here.
1.) What are you currently feeding your dog?
2.) Why are you feeding it?
3.) How would you rate it out of all the foods you've fed (from 1-10, 1 being lowest).
4.) What food have you fed that showed the best results in your dogs?
Guess I'll go first =)
--------------------
- Go! Natural Grain Free Kibble http://www.petcurean.com/index.php?page_id=44
- I choice to switch to grain free recently for greater absorption of nutrients, higher amounts of protein, and less waste.
The Go! Natural food has a wonderful line up of ingredients.
The food is expensive but I feed far less of it then almost any other brand (so it actually stays cost effective.)
Since changing to this food I have noticed my girl Jindos have become grumpier then usual, my older gal has finally started to put on a little weight (for the first time).
So this food offered me an array of pro's and cons.
Their coats are not as nice on this food as their previous diet however.
- I would probably rate this food as a 8. I was hoping to see more coat improvement, and I have to wonder if the added aggression is due to something in the food. Still it's one of the foods to offer great results.
SWITCHING TO:
- Nature's Variety Instinct Grain Free, Rabbit http://www.naturesvariety.com/conten...9483Vlyo344CAE
- I chose this grain free food for it's alternative ingredients and protein which is not limited to muscle meat, and high calories (to help keep weight on my girls). For a grain free formula the protein is not outrageously high, which is an added plus.
- I can't rate this food yet, it's still being shipped to us, but I can't wait to try it.
- I believe some of the foods I've fed that offered my girls the best results were...
Eagle Pack - Sardine & Anchovy
Solid Gold - Wolf King
Go! Natural - Grain Free |

| Re: What Do You Feed & Why + Best Foods 1) raw
2) food intolerances to kibble diets in one of our dogs
3) 10, it's the best thing we've ever done
4) raw
When we are away and someone needs to dogsit for us our dogs eat Solid Gold Barking at the Moon or Taste of the Wild Wetlands.
Since we are never away for more than a few weeks the kibble diet is tolerable for the sensitive dog. And the other two don't seem to mind.
Our elderly cat is also on a raw diet. And when we are away she gets Inova or Taste of the Wild. |

| Re: What Do You Feed & Why + Best Foods 1.) What are you currently feeding your dog?
- The adults are on Dog Chow; my 7 week old pups & their dam are on Puppy Chow; our in whelp bitch is on Purina ONE puppy
2.) Why are you feeding it?
- Feeding the Dog Chow because the lower protein and fat levels are what they need for the warmer months when they are less active. The pups and their dam are on Puppy Chow because I prefer the way it maintains weight, coats, and firm stools. It's my choice as a growth diet. The in whelp bitch is on Purina ONE because that is what she does best on - coat and energy wise.
3.) How would you rate it out of all the foods you've fed (from 1-10, 1 being lowest).
- I would have to say when comparing it to other diets, I give the Dog Chow/Puppy Chow a 10 and the Purina ONE an 8-9.
4.) What food have you fed that showed the best results in your dogs?
- Purina. lol. The other really top notch diets I've used were Eukanuba & Evolve, this is going back a few years before P&G really had a chance to screw up the original Euk formula. Now, that was a great food. It was slowly going downhill over the past few years and I stopped using it almost 2yrs ago. Evolve was an awesome feed, I was able to use the Adult forumla on pups, adults, seniors. THICK gorgeous goats, good litter sizes, easy whelpings. Only drawback was large, soft poos.Unfortunately, they completely changed the formula about 6-7 months ago, raised the price $10 per bag, and my oldest dog pooped out a pool of blood. Have been using Purina on/off for about 4-5 yrs now and like it the best. Probably have tried close to two dozen brands in the past 8yrs. |

| Re: What Do You Feed & Why + Best Foods 1.) What are you currently feeding your dog? a little bit of everything, based on convenience depending on the day.. Raw meals, home-cooked meals, Canidae kibble, add-ins of raw egg 1-2 times a week, a fish meal once a week... hmm, I think that's about it.
2.) Why are you feeding it? it is what I have found through an insane amount of research to be the healthiest choice for my pup and he is thriving and growing just as he should.
3.) How would you rate it out of all the foods you've fed (from 1-10, 1 being lowest). 10 for sure
4.) What food have you fed that showed the best results in your dogs? This is the best rotation I have developed, it works wonderfully for my pup and me. |

| Re: What Do You Feed & Why + Best Foods 1.) What are you currently feeding your dog?
Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Fish
Raw Twice a week
2.) Why are you feeding it?
It's free of corn, grains, by products, preservatives and it's a fish based food. 3.) How would you rate it out of all the foods you've fed (from 1-10, 1 being lowest).
I'd give the NB a 7-8 maybe a 9. I would like to get him one all raw, but right now it would't work. 4.) What food have you fed that showed the best results in your dogs?
Probably the NB. We've tried Solid Gold Wee Bits, Barking at the moon, and Hund-N-Flocken, Innova Evo red meat (he didn't like that one bit). He's a picky dog though and i'm a picky owner. |

| Re: What Do You Feed & Why + Best Foods 1.) Trey, Beau, and Rose- California Natural Herring and Sweet Potatoe
Nikki- Merrick Granny's Pot Pies (for some reason I had been saying Wellness)
Summer- Innova EVO Small Bites Red Meat plus a variety of EVO canned, some CN canned, and some Instinct canned depending on what's in stock
2.) one dog has allergies so he's on CN. Nik went through a real scare January and stopped eating. The Merrick is the only thing she'd touch and as we wanted her to eat and not starve, that's what she gets. I want Summer on something high protein as she's working to be a sports dog and she is higher energy...
3.) 9ish
4.) raw- it's just not doable though right now |

| Re: What Do You Feed & Why + Best Foods 1.) What are you currently feeding your dog? Currently I'm feeding Solid Gold- Hund-n-Flocken
2.) Why are you feeding it? My recently passed dog had allergies to Corn and Solid Gold was the only thing I could find around here
3.) How would you rate it out of all the foods you've fed (from 1-10, 1 being lowest). Seeing how I've used, Science diet (dog wouldn't even touch it), Purina one, Eub... I would rate it a 10 against these brands
4.) What food have you fed that showed the best results in your dogs? Solid Gold. Its the only top quality food I've been able to get my hands on.. |

| Re: What Do You Feed & Why + Best Foods 1) Raw, Nutro
2) Raw because I feel it is the best for them, optimum nutrition IMO. They like it the best (of course) and it seems to keep them the healthiest.
Nutro chicken/rice/oatmeal and Nutro Venison/Rice/Oatmeal - Because it was free
Nutro High Energy - It is a lot easier for teens to feed kibble vs raw when they baby sit. No added responsibility, confusion or worries of food poisoning. It isn't the highest quality food but they do well on this due to the half way decent digestibility (although its lower then what it used to be) and the high protein and fat content. We can't get really any high quality feeds around this area (used to have to drive over an hour and a half every month just to get this), so what I've compared it to this is above those and a plus we get the best deal on it. Even if something else was heck half the price its even lower quality and the dogs don't fair as well on the other brands. They also have to eat more of the most the other brands, whether they are more expensive or cheaper.
3) Raw 9-10 I think mostly 10 but it depends what I put in it, they do well all the way around but since I make it myself sometimes I've got to change things up depending on if they start a growth spurt or something like that. I've got to keep the contents correct but still vary the meals.
Nutro 7-8 They do surprising well on it, especially when compared to other kibble that I've tried. Compared to Raw of course Raw wins out.
4) Raw

| Re: What Do You Feed & Why + Best Foods 1.) What are you currently feeding your dog?
**Innova Adult dry food (green bag) and some Innova canned in a kong toy as a treat**
2.) Why are you feeding it?
**I heard good things about it, my dog likes it, I like the ingredient list, my dog does well on it, convenient for me to find--store less than a mile from my work**
3.) How would you rate it out of all the foods you've fed (from 1-10, 1 being lowest).
**10. I've fed Flint River Ranch (also good, but I think Innova is better), Nutro, Eukanuba, Purina Pro Plan/One/Dog Chow, Iams, Diamond--not all to the same dog, but over the years**
4.) What food have you fed that showed the best results in your dogs?
**I fed my previous collies quite a few of the foods listed above (one for a while and then I'd switch after hearing about something better--just learning about dog foods then). The best one I fed for them was Flint River Ranch. My current dog was being fed Pedigree at the shelter. I wanted to switch her to Innova, so I mixed it with the Pedigree at first. She picked out the Innova and wouldn't touch the Pedigree, so that told me a lot. I just switched her to the Innova immediately and she blossomed. So, for her Innova works great** |

| Re: What Do You Feed & Why + Best Foods 1.) What are you currently feeding your dog? Wellness Core Ocean Formula with Natural Balance canned food mixed in.
2.) Why are you feeding it? I used to think Max had food allergies so I switched him to grain free, single-protein foods. Now I am fairly sure I was wrong, but he does well on grain free and the fish formulas make his coat softer. I put the canned on so it will be tastier for him. He's a small dog so it doesn't cost too, too much. I also use the NB canned because it's a lot less expensive than other quality canned items.
3.) How would you rate it out of all the foods you've fed (from 1-10, 1 being lowest). Hmmm....I'd say an 8 or a 9. It's way better than the Canidae which he was itchy on and wasn't particularly crazy about. Though the canned isn't as nice as the EVO was. It's a little better than NB kibble too because his poops are firmer. Still I'd leave some room for improvement, because if I had the time, money and my own house I would probably feed raw.
4.) What food have you fed that showed the best results in your dogs? So far the Wellness Core...one day I'll try raw though and I have high hopes for it. |

| Re: What Do You Feed & Why + Best Foods 1.) What are you currently feeding your dog? I'm currently feeding my girls a mixture of everything. I have tried kibble, home cooked, and raw. I find they do best on a wide variety of foods. My little girl seems to do better without kibble. Although I wish she would eat some as you can't always manage to travel with a raw/home cooked diet and my doggy sitters aren't always comfortable with raw in their homes. She was raised on raw from the beginning and seems to do best on raw combined with home cooked. My older girl is currently on Wellness Core combined with home cooked, and less raw than the little one.
2.) Why are you feeding it? I feel they do best with a variety. I'm currently showing them and they both have super healthy shiny coats. Their stools are firm, and they seem to produce less waste on this diet.
3.) How would you rate it out of all the foods you've fed (from 1-10, 1 being lowest). 10. I'm happy with our variety and they way my girls are looking right now. Out of the kibbles i've fed i'm really liking the Wellness Core over most of them. We've tried Merricks, Innova, and Canidae.
4.) What food have you fed that showed the best results in your dogs? Mentioned above. |

| Re: What Do You Feed & Why + Best Foods 1.) What are you currently feeding your dog?
Canine Life Adult dog muffins + wild salmon oil + vitamin E (twice a week) and Udo's probiotic (because she is on antibiotics at the moment)
2.) Why are you feeding it?
Because I add the meat, veggies, and fruit to a mix and can have variety of each in each batch. I can use sweet potato, green beans and blueberries and chicken in one batch and butternut squash, broccoli, raspberries and turkey in the next. Plus I know what's in it for the most part. And my dog loves it which makes me happy because she's a picky eater. It also has reduced her tear stains a great deal and her coat and eyes are soft and bright and she has endless energy. It's also convenient because I bake it into muffins.
3.) How would you rate it out of all the foods you've fed (from 1-10, 1 being lowest).
It would be a 10; I've also fed Urban Wolf which is almost the same idea but you use raw meat and it's grain free (but it already has the veggies and fruit so less variety). You just mix meat, egg and oil with the mix and serve.
4.) What food have you fed that showed the best results in your dogs? Definitely the Canine Life. I used to feed her Innova which gave good results;same with the Urban Wolf. The only food she had trouble with was Merrick's puppy plate - it made her tear stains worse and her behaviour was erratic. But different things affect different dogs. |

| Re: What Do You Feed & Why + Best Foods 1.) What are you currently feeding your dog? Zoe eats Orijen, and Zack is being switched to California Natural
2.) Why are you feeding it? Orijen because it's low carb and after Zoe's dental infection I'm doing everything I can to keep her teeth clean. Cali Natural for Zack because he gets stress-related diarrhea so I'm hoping the simple formula will work for him
3.) How would you rate it out of all the foods you've fed (from 1-10, 1 being lowest). Orijen -10 so far but too soon to tell
4.) What food have you fed that showed the best results in your dogs? Had great results for Zoe with Nature's Variety Prairie Beef and Rice and Innova Small bites. |

2.) We have an epileptic dog and wanted to rule out food as a trigger. Plus, I sat through a pet nutrition talk and heard what's REALLY in kibble...YUCK! I won't ever feed it again!
3.) 10
4.) Raw, definitely. |

| Re: What Do You Feed & Why + Best Foods I just have to say that I'm so happy to see so many others who feed raw.
I believe if everyone sat down and really looked into what was put into kibble that nobody would ever use it again. With all that 'garbage' on the market it's no wonder so many puppies (hey, they're all puppies to me. ) are dying from obesity, rotting teeth, general poor health and other unnatural causes so much more than old age anymore. Yes, I know some of this is owner neglect but if the dogs were fed raw their health would be much better, teeth would be beautiful pearly whites, etc....
Jihad
and her raw fed pound puppy crew.
