I believe if everyone sat down and really looked into what was put into kibble that nobody would ever use it again. With all that 'garbage' on the market it's no wonder so many puppies (hey, they're all puppies to me. ) are dying from obesity, rotting teeth, general poor health and other unnatural causes so much more than old age anymore. Yes, I know some of this is owner neglect but if the dogs were fed raw their health would be much better, teeth would be beautiful pearly whites, etc....

and her raw fed pound puppy crew.
on the same hand you have to understand that raw doesnt settle well with every dog.

Re: What Do You Feed & Why + Best Foods

This is a excellent thread. I love to hear about the choices made by others and why.

Cagney (standard schnauzer)- was on Solid Gold Hund N Flocken until she was producing large amounts of yeast in her stools. Thought she had a lamb allergy. Switched her to Innova Adult. Did very well except she gained 7 lbs in the last 6 months and her stools once again showed lots of yeast. Currently switching to Wellness Core Ocean for no grains, hypoallergenic feed.

Rio (springer spaniel) was on Solid Gold as pup. Rio has dry eyes aggrevated by allergies. Currently on Wellness Core and doing excellent. To make it easier for me I plan to have both dogs on Wellness Core Ocean.

I rate Solid Gold and Innova excellent but just not tolerated by my Cagney.
Choice to go with Wellness Core- grainless, moderate protein levels.
The cost of this food in Canada is outrageous- just paid with taxes $99.00 for a large bag of wellness core

oh wow. i can get a large bag for $50 here and i thought that was high! im sorry to hear about the high pricetag knowing that this food is working good for you!

1.) What are you currently feeding your dog?

My girls are both on Taste Of The Wild- High Prairie

2.) Why are you feeding it?

I tried a buch of other foods, and tried raw too. Every food i tried, my harelquin was ok, but my brindle always had a coarse dry coat, and some dandruff. On raw, they both didnt do well and lost weight and just didnt have the kick they used to. so i decided to go grain free and see if maybe it was the grains causing my brindles poor coat. it was!

3.) How would you rate it out of all the foods you've fed (from 1-10, 1 being lowest).

well, it all depends on the dog. for my particular dogs
-raw- 3
-eagle pack holistic selects- 8
-solid gold wolf cub- 9
-taste of the wild- 10

but this is just MY dogs, some dogs will do better on these foods and some might to worse

4.) What food have you fed that showed the best results in your dogs?

Best food... thats a toss up. The eagle pack helped my brindles growth when she had HOD, it slowed it down a lot and corrected a lot of her conformation problems. but the taste of the wild has left them both stunning.

Re: What Do You Feed & Why + Best Foods

1. I'm feeding Natural Balance Duck and Potato Formula
2. Combination of online ratings/research/advice and friend's recommendation
3. 9
4. Artemis - 10 but it was too expensive where it was sold.
Science Diet - 3 he does not like it, leaves it sitting forever

Cody is only a puppy. I had him for only 1 month. I bought the Science Diet not knowing, but after online research, saw it sucked (plus he didn't really seem to like it). And bought the Artemis at a specialty store. He loved it, but after he ran out I had to debate whether I could continue this expensive, not easily accessible brand or find one that I could easily pick up affordably. Learned about the Natural Balance and right now he enjoys it. He will scarf it down if I wet it a little.

You're the first person on here I've read that's fed Artemis. The store we get our raw food from sells Artemis. it's really expensive, but I think if I needed to switch to kibble for some reason, we'd get that. Esp if it was for a short time. We've had samples and ours loved it as well, but we never fed them it long enough to see how they did on it.

what she said and because real food has to be better than anything that can be bought for $45 with a 6 mos. shelf life.

Re: What Do You Feed & Why + Best Foods

Do homemade diets or raw diets make your dog picky about what s/he eats? Is it easy for them to go back to kibble or do some of your dogs sniff the kibble and walk away during feeding time.

Kintaro was on Natures Recipe and then he had the runs also I realized it's not good at all so I returned it. I give it a 3.

I switched to Solid Gold puppy HF. He's been on it for a week and a half so far it's been pretty good. I really have nothing to compare to except the 1st one i mentioned. His stool is less smellier and solid. I don't know If its an okay brand for a dog his size because the kibble looks bigger than i expected. they didnt have a toy puppy formula.

i'm planning to rotate onto Orijen, Innova or raw after more research.

Re: What Do You Feed & Why + Best Foods

I feed Cody Orijen Puppy formula kibbles. He also gets EVO canned food mixed in with some meals just to add variety to the taste.

Both of these are grain free. I picked the Orijen because it seemed like the absolute best puppy specific kibble I could find. When he's grown up I'll probably feed the Orijen fish formula or one of the EVO kibbles.

I can't say what else I've tried or what has the best results because I'm new to dog ownership So far, he's doing well on these foods though.

I'm considering adding raw suppliments to his diet... but the whole thing just sounds overwhelming. I don't think I'll ever totally switch to raw either unless I win the lottery. I really can't justify spending more on Cody's food than my own. Coming off of a student budget I barely feed myself meat once a week!

I dont think that it makes them picky.... I do use kibble for training treats and they think its wonderful.... to them kibble is kinda like McDonalds..... they don't get it often so when they do they think it is wonderful....

a few years ago I took them across canada to a dog show... bringing meat to Canada at the time was difficult and I didnt bother, I bought a bag of kibble and decided to use that for the week we were gone....

my dogs thought they had died and gone to heaven,,,, and that I had lost my mom.... they could not understand why Mom had filled their bowls with treats....

I have fed exclusively raw food for 8 years.... I dont think a little kibble now and again kills them but I woulnd't want their main diet to be kibble.

but with regards to making them picky
no not at all, at least not in my experience
