Beets used in road de-icer, used also as filler in dog food

How do you feel about this? I have read on the food analysis site that they find beet fibers as fillers in some dog food and they find it a controversial filler. What do you think?

I don't know what their using beets in road de-icer has to do with anything...?

That said beet fiber is fairly indigestible, so it is a filler, but as far as I know it's not a common allergen trigger like wheat or corn, so it's the lesser evil in comparison to many other fillers on the market. I don't know all that much about it's nutritional content, so I can't say much else.

I think the way some of the 'non-premium' dog food manufacturers use it in large amounts as filler is ridiculous. However, I wouldn't hold it against a food just because it had beet pulp in it if it were a quality food otherwise. It may be beneficial (as fiber/prebiotic) for some dogs in small amounts if you are going to feed kibble. Check out the info on it here:

I agree with Cascabel; however, my dog, as a pup, had wicked ear infections and I took him off the dog food he came on and avoided any food with dried beet pulp--he is now going to be two--no ear infections since he was five months old!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
