Do I give it more time?

Hey guys. I switched Mac'N'roe to Canidae about a month ago. They did well with the switch at first. Well, Mac is fine...he likes it and poop is firm.

Roe, on the other hand, had a very bad bout of diarrhea last week. There were multiple things going on I think. I switched to bland diet for her to recover. and she immediately firmed up (with meds too). After two days (or so) I tried reintroducing kibble, and within 3 hours she had loose stool with mucous and her energy level chaged (lower) dramatically. I am still on a bland diet (5 days) and looking to phase in kibble. Should I try Canidae once more, or change her to something else? I just don't know what to do!

I've decided on California Natural for puppies if I switch...it has less ingredients. maybe it will be easier on her stomach. However, will it be as good for her (and him?). And, am I certain that the food is the culprit.

How long does it generally take for a puppy to get used to the food? Have I not given it enough time?

While Canidae is an excellent food not all dogs can tolerate it. Apparently Roe is one of those dogs. Maybe one of the proteins doesn't sit well with her. I think if she has a problem with the formula she's on, the lamb might be too much for her as well, but hey you can try it.

From my own personal experience, your plan to go with a food that has less ingredients is a good one. If Roe has IBD or colitis, less is definitely better. Has your vet talked about IBD or colitis?

Buck has colitis and he does very well on NB Fish and Sweet Potato.

Just a btw, if you plan to switch Roe to something else, Mac should be able to eat it as well so you're not buying 2 different foods.

Don't know if this is helpful or not.

Yes, helpful. Thanks for the feedback.

My vet hasn't talked with me about IBD or colitis. I think there was too much happening at the time the bout of diarrhea came along to really determine the exact cause. (she was being treated for demodectic too with a amitraz dip)...but the diarrhea came a week after that...so I don't think that was it. I would assume that if it persisted, and I went back to them with a concern, they would look further into those types of coniditions. Really, I don't think it's shown cause for that yet.

I think the food is just too rich and then I gave her a treat she hadn't had before...and that sent her over the edge. But, after seeing the effects of trying to go back to Canidae...I think I'm gonna try the California Natural. However, if I do switch her and she has trouble...I think I'll try to look into further explanations.

and yes, I'll switch Mac too..he seems to be fine. I don't want to have them on different foods.

I guess my question would be, is it typical (or maybe not typical...but does it happen frequently) that it would take 10 or so days for the stomach to suddenly start rejecting the food? They were on Pedigree puppy prior and I did a week transition. I would say their stool was softer after the change...and then boom...watery for Roe
