| Purina, Iams, Beneful, and Pedigree are EXTREMELY poor quality foods, and are full of fillers, and undigestibles.
Try these:
Innova
Neutro
Natural Balance
Eagle Pack |

| Nutro is decent, you might also look at Nature's Recipe, it's comparably priced and very good quality. |

| I do currently feed my dogs a Purina product (Pro Plan). Mind you, IMHO it's better quality than Dog Chow, but it's Purina nonetheless and I can't personally see anything wrong with the brand itself. However, having said that, there are many people here that feel strongly against Purina and Iams for one personal reason or other. It is a personal choice as to what you think is a good or poor quality product or ingredients. It's a choice you need to make for yourself.
I don't know what you have available in your area, but if you have a Petco, Petsmart, or a local feed store you might be able to find Purina ONE, Pro Plan or NutriSource. My dogs have done great on these foods and IMHO they are of decent quality. Diamond is also IMHO a decent quality food that is inexpensively priced.
Good luck! Let us know what you decide.

| While they don't make a puppy food, we use Kirkland Chicken/Rice that you buy at Costco warehouse stores - its $15 for 40 lbs of food. The pieces are small (we have a full grown lab) and she loves it.
Its high quality food - not the best, but many lab owners feed that. Kirkland is made for Costco by the Diamond company which does have high quality food for dogs.
They also have the Lamb/Rice but Keno doesn't like it as well. |

| Petsmart's own brand, Authority is a pretty good quality food. It is quite reasonably priced also. |

| I understand that your question was "Why don't I feed purina" It's simple for me, it's to high priced and doesn't give the same results of the other brands I've been able to find.
I feed Black Gold myself, my dogs (house pets & Walker hounds) have been doing well on it for years. Very little waste usualy means good holesome ingredients. The dogs crap comes out solid, not runny. The hounds get enough energy to hunt all night. It's also realitivy cheap @ just $13.00-18.00 per 50# bag depending on what protien/fat content you choose.
Another brand I would recomend for a working dog would be Jazz, and SportMix should also be avaliable in your area (WV) which is probably a few steps higher than purina. |
