I keep reading how rice and grains and such are a bad idea for dogs. When my dog has loose stools - from eating something in the yard or whatever - the vet says to give rice and boiled hamburg until the problem is better. So why is that OK if rice is bad? What do you feed your dog when loose stools or throwing up are a problem?

I think the thinking is to fill the belly yet keep the digestion very simple. We feed white rice and boil some chicken.

Rice is not bad. Some dogs have grain allergies so then rice is bad for them. And some dog food companies use excessive amounts as filler...bad.

In the grand scheme of things rice is a good source of protein and helps firm up loose stools. However, dogs aren't humans and when rice is used as a primary source of protein (instead of meat) then I have to think twice about feeding that source.

For short term use, rice is a good thing.

rice is not a bad thing for dogs. in fact brown rice is actually healthy for them. i give my dog rice cakes all the time, he loves them
