Have I made a mistake?

When I switched my dogs to Timberwolf, I ordered 3 bags, all different flavors. My thought at the time was lets give them some variety. Well now that I have it and have actually thought about it, I have come to realize that if I open all three at once, they might go bad before they can possibly eat them. So, will i have to worry about switching them each time to the new flavor the same way I worried about switching them from Fit and Trim? Does this make any sense at all? I swear I must have been like Lucy in another life; I always manage to screw things up lol.

Re: Have I made a mistake?

I would just keep two of the bags sealed. I don't think you have to worry as much, staying within the same brand about switching them over to a different food. The largest part of the ingredients are the same. The only thing (I would think) that you would have to worry about is one of the dogs being not doing well with one of them (like a lamb allergy or something like that).

Re: Have I made a mistake?

Do you have access to a big freezer, such as a chest-type freezer? I grow and can and freeze a lot of foods, and a freezer is a must. If you do, you could open the bags, put them in gallon size ziploc bags, and freeze them. Since freezers are much more efficient when they are full, maybe if a friend has a freezer with extra room in it, they might let you store some food in their freezer. Some people actually use filled gallon water jugs to fill up the dead space if their freezer isn't full, so you could do them a favor. My daughter also has a great gadget that removes the air and individually vacuum seals food, called a "Foodsaver". I sometimes borrow that and that keeps food fresh for a LONG time. Luckily, or unluckily as far as the pocketbook goes, Ruby is an 88 pound rottweiler/lab mix,and no bag of dog food ever stays around long enough to go bad!! I think if buying too much dog food is the worst thing you can do to mess up, you're doing pretty well.

Re: Have I made a mistake?

Which Timberwolf types did you get? I would just rotate each time the bag ends. That is what I do and my dog is fine. The only issue you might have is the two Timberwolf grainless variety (Wild & Nautural and Ocean Fish) as they are probably much richer than the others, so you might want to do a little transition if going from one of the others to one of those.

Re: Have I made a mistake?

I got Southwest Chicken and Herbs, Lamb and Apples, and Ocean Blue. I will be careful with them then. Both dogs are doing well on the SW Chicken. Scruffy saw his first snow last night and this morning and after getting over his fear decided it was a tasty treat. He went out to potty this morning and ingested quite a bit, came in jumped on me and barfed lol. Poor guy. Wow that food stinks when it comes back.

Re: Have I made a mistake?

I rotate foods with my dogs and I have never had any issues. I change brands each time as well. They are all about the same quality though. I doubt you will have any issues but if you are concerned then when you have a few meals left of the old bag, open the new and mix a bit in. It is just different flavors though so it should not make much of a difference.
