Does it matter where the protein comes from?

I had posted earlier with regard to protein percentages in dog food. The food with more grain had higher protein percentages than the food with more meat. But I was just wondering - does it matter where the protein comes from, as far as a dogs health is concerned, whether it comes from meat or grains or do you just look at the percentage when you buy dog food? Do they metablized it differently and therefore one is better than the other??

Re: Does it matter where the protein comes from?

It definitely think it matters. Protein in grains differs significantly from protein in meats, not only in composition but also in digestability.

For example, I would not worry about high levels of protein from digestable meat sources. However, I would not give lots of protein derived from grains because they aren't broken down and utilized as well which puts stress on the dog's body.

These links really say it much better though.

Thank you so much for the links and now I understand the difference. I makes a lot of sense now when I read the dog food labels. Thanks again.
