i was reading about the dog food ratings and used the dog food calculator at the top of this forum and i was wondering.. are there any sites or general rules of thumb about dog treats that anyone might know about? or what are just plain good ones to buy? thanks

Re: Dog treats

Since the treats are not meant to constitute a significant portion of their diets, it's probably less critical that they be nutrionally balanced, as long as they aren't toxic.

Re: Dog treats

I now look for treats that are name brand and do not say "Made in China". The same for dog toys>No Chinese lead paint.

Re: Dog treats

When I switched food to take out wheat and corn (Cherokee was itchy), I started reading treat labels and only get ones without wheat and corn. He likes them better than milk bones and he has less gas. He was given some treats for Christmas that he loved but made him super thirsty. I read the label and they had salt as an ingredient. I don't think I'll replace them.

Re: Dog treats

I am guilty of feeding junk food treats...lol I figure that for as big as theo is, and he only gets 2 or 3 cookies a day, it's kinda like us, we can eat 2 oreos a day, lol. It's not going to kill him, and milkbones are cheap, lol.

Re: Dog treats

I usually go for the natural treats, my dogs tend to enjoy them a bit more than standard milk bones. In fact my German Shepherd won't even eat the milk bone treats.

I think the ones I buy are made by Vita-life Chicken Tenders or something similar. They look like little chicken strips dried out. My dogs love them. A large bag is about $20 at petsmart but there are enough in there to last me quite awhile.

They also sell a canister of dried out liver treats that I use for training and the lamb rolls I slice up and then freeze and take to dog training classes. I make sure to save the good stuff for teaching new tricks.

Re: Dog treats

I buy the peanut butter blueberry dog treats from www.poochieheaven.com for my two dogs. My GSD is a very picky eater but loves these treats. They are good for him too so I don't feel as bad giving them too him. They offer two different flavors that I may try the next time I get treats for him. I don't think I will ever be able to go back to the milkbones and other treats like that because of what they are made of.
