Supermarket dog food

I've heard that the convenience food you can get from your local shop or your local supermarket is equivalent to doggy McDonalds. Is this the case? Should I stick to varieties like Nature Diet or Science Plan, even though my 10 month old pup doesn't seem to like them all that much. (She goes crazy for the stuff you get from the supermarket though, ie: Cesar et al) Mind you i've only given her that stuff once because we ran out of food.

Cheers.

The problem with a lot of supermarket foods is that they are mostly filler. (corn and corn meal) So you have to feed more, they poop more, and generally they don't have the best quality ingredients. There are some varieties that are better than others. Usually the first 5-7 ingredients can give you a good idea of the quality. If corn is the first ingredient move on. I won't discount supermarket foods entirely as I've heard too many breeders and performance dog owners say they feed a supermarket variety food and their dogs look great. Mine don't do as well on them. Their coats get dull and they shed a lot more. So I stick with my Canidae as much as it pains me to pay $35 a bag!

in my opinion if you must buy supermarket food then purina one is the best.I used it for years, infact i still do but i mix it with chicken soup for the dog lovers soul.

Yes, I agree. If you absolutely must go supermarket, Purina ONE and IAMS are probably your best choices. At least they have named meat products as the first ingredients- unlike things like Dog Chow, Beneful, etc. You might get lucky and find a quality locally-developed food at the supermarket (here it's Pro Diet), but chances are slim to none.

Just my 2c,
Darcy
