Switching from Nutro to Wellness or Canidae

So Lula has been eatting Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and Rice Adult food her whole life. I've tried feeding her Innova once but she got runny poo. The vet told me that the Innova was to rich for her and to keep her on the Nutro since she has done great on it. So she's been on it for almost 8 yrs.

I have been wanting to switch her food since the whole recall thing happend. It makes me so mad that Nutro canned food would be made in the same place as Old Roy! I know Nutro now makes there own canned food and that there dry was never recalled but it still makes me wonder about the quality of there food.

I recently went to a opinion site and looked up other peoples opinions on Nutro. There were alot of people that didn't like the food and said there dog throws up bile every now and then. Lula has done this her whole life, about once a week or so. She has not thrown up in about a year though. I have asked the vet about it and he told me that she must of ate something that upset her. He's always told me it's not the food. We've always thought that maybe she just has a sensitive stomach. Now I don't know. After reading all the other peoples problems with there dogs throwing up. After they switched foods they were ok. Also, Lula hates the food and sometimes won't eat unless we really cox her and stand right by her. Other people have complained about this too.

Nutro has recently changed there ingredients in the last year. They have added more fillers and they have added other things like soy to there food. I was thinking of switching Lula to the Nutro NC senior food. I was looking at the ingredients and the first one is rice flour. ??? Nutro has always said meat meal was there number one ingredient. The last time I looked at the ingredients meat meal was the number one ingredient. The rep told me that there senior and weight management foods have lower fat and calories thats why meat is not number one. Why would they sacrafice the meat and add more fillers to lower the fat/calories? I can go on and on about this!

But anyways, I bought a small bag of Wellness Super5Mix Lamb and a small bag of Canidae Platnium (for seniors and less active dogs) the other day. When I got home I was so anxious to try the food I cracked open both bags and gave Lula a few kibbles of both to see if she liked them. She LOVES both of them. She sat by the pantry door were I put her food all night. She's been on the Wellness mixed with the nurto for 3 days now. She stands by her bowl and stares at me like "where's my food?". I've never seen her scarf her food before like she does with the Wellness. I've been mixing the food together and she picks out the Wellness and eats it first. She spits out the Nutro on the floor then eats it last. I don't know how she does this but it funny!

I was taking to the guy at the store I went to and he told me that I don't have to feed my dog the senior food if she is doing good on the adult. He told me that the only difference in the senior and adult is the fat content and the glucosamine and chondroitin. He told me not to get any vitamin supplements. He told me that a dog that eats to much glocos/chond when it doesn't need it will get immuned to it. And when the dog needs it, it won't be as effective. Has anybody heard of this? This is why I bought the Wellness Super5mix Lamb adult. Also she has been on Lamb mix her whole life so I'm hesitent to feed her the Canidae because it has Chicken/Turkey ect.. Canidae did not have a lamb senior formula and wellness senior was chicken (and wasn't as good as the super5mix so I hear) So far I've only tried the Wellness and no runny poo. But I bought the Canidae because it was a senior formula. I don't know which one to switch her to. Should I stick with the Wellness adult or go with Canidae Platnium senior? Does anyone mix the food together? Would this be ok? I'm confused???? Any help will be appreciated! And Sorry for the long post!

Re: Switching from Nutro to Wellness or Canidae

Hello Crazy Dog,
I feed mostly raw which I've been doing for over 15 years without any problems or illnesses. But with 7 fur babies it's difficult to feed completely raw so I give everyone a kibble breakfast along with some fresh raw goats milk. Mostly Solid Gold, but they do love Canidae as well. Canines were built to enjoy variety in life, despite what Vet's say. That's how they eat in the wild not the same thing every day. I know I would hate that. Your friend may have problems in the beginning with the change because her system is so used to the same exact thing. Just give it time. The mixing of dog foods is great. What one food is lacking another will make up. Mix a little can as well.....variety is the spice of life.

And about the glucos/chond info you received.....I've never heard of such a thing and have been giving it to my hip dysplasia dog for 14 years with wonderful results.

As for the bile that she's throwing up is it yellow? If so I had a dog years ago that did this on a daily basis. I fed him only once a day and it stopped when I fed him twice. Was told it was due to hunger.

I hope this helps and good luck.

Re: Switching from Nutro to Wellness or Canidae

Thanks for the reply and encouragment! I was a bit hesitant about the Canidae because I figured it would give her diarrhea. She is doing great on the Wellness mixed with Nutro so far. I think I'm going to mix the Wellness and Canidae with the Nutro for the time being. Then I might do a rotation, changing the food every month. Wellness and Canidae. I guess I was just scared to try variety because everything I always read say dogs have a sensitive digestive system. I think Lula is going to LOVE the variety now.

I do mix canned food with her kibble about once a week or so. Should I mix it more often? I hear canned food is bad for there teeth.

As for the vomiting. Yes, the bile is yellow. I do feed her twice a day but some times she doesn't eat all her food. Sometimes we have to cox her to even eat her food. I think she may be bord of the Nutro. Sometimes she eats it like she grossed out. Now that I think of it I would be grossed out if I had to eat the same thing every day. LOL!

Thanks again

Re: Switching from Nutro to Wellness or Canidae

lol....yea, if I had to eat cereal everyday I would only eat enough to stay alive!!

The only time canned food is bad for tooth health is when it's fed as a sole food source. When it's mixed with dry and you give healthy chewies on the side it makes a wonderful addition to their feed and it has less processing than dried. Of course choose the ones that are whole chunks for these have the least amount of processing. Dry and canned is also a very good mix for dogs with deep chests that have a tendency to bloat.

As for the sensitive digestion......oh, you should see some of the things my kids scarf down and keep down....I live in the country so sometimes while we're out for a walk they find goodies I'm not going to mention. But canines are set up with a digestive machine that would put any animal to shame. In the wild they eat things that have sat around for weeks. Remember processed dog food has only been around since the 40's before that they ate anything they could get from our scraps to hunting on their own.

It should be fun to watch her reaction to the variety.....I hope you both have fun with it.

Re: Switching from Nutro to Wellness or Canidae

you can feed your dog canned only if you give them lots to chew and brush their teeth once a week. ideally all dog owners should be brushing their dogs teeth once a day regardless of the dog food they feed, but once a week is better than nothing.

i've been feeding wellness for a few weeks now and my dog absolutely loves it and does really well on it. i did have to add a bit of canned pumpkin because he was a tad constipated, and i always add a few drops of sunflower oil for his coat.

Good point Annamarie.....tooth brushing is important and a lot of fun with 7 dogs. lol. I think the ones that fit over the finger are the easiest, for me anyway.
Canned pumpkin is a must have in any doggy home. I use olive oil....it can be a little pricey. And as a supplement the Missing Link. It's a whole food supplement so there's no fear of over supplementing. Everyone "shines like new money".....as mom used to say.

I do brush Lula's teeth about once a week and she gets a yearly teeth cleaning at the vet. As for the finger tooth brushes..... I can't use those anymore because one day she thought my finger was a chew toy. Ouch! Now I just use the regular doggy tooth brushes. She doesn't seem to mind them.

I didn't know about the canned pumpkin or the olive oil. Thanks for the tips.

About the Missing Link, I posted a thread acouple of weeks ago about vitamin supplements and no one responded. I was thinking of giving Lula Missing Link. But I was worried about over supplementing. Thanks for the info on that!

Re: Switching from Nutro to Wellness or Canidae

Your dog throwing up so frequently, kind of sounds like mine only 16mo. What conclusions have you come to. I've tried everything, Nutro and Wellness made it worse. Now going to try Canidae Will vomit 1-2 times per month. Can be overnite bile, or just during the day from eating something foreign. Can not consume anything other than food or comes back up. I'm hoping he outgrows this. Vet said checks out fine, no allergies. Is yours concerned? How frequent is too much or what is the norm? Any input would appreciate.
