Chewing treats

Luna needs a good chewing treat to work out her jaws. Everything she has right now (except her kong, which she only marginally likes - even when it's stuffed with treats) is too soft or she eats too quickly. What does everyone recommend?

And here's a question for the horse people out there. This Thanksgiving our family went to visit relatives who have horses. The farrier had recently been by, and there were lots of hoof clippings laying around everywhere. Apparently the dogs next door have a field day whenever the farrier comes, because they love to chew on the trimmings. Those dogs are big labs. Luna is not quite 5 pounds. We brought one of the trimmings home with us. Is it safe for her to chew? My worry would be splinters, like in cooked poultry bones, but none of the dogs next door have ever had a problem. Also, I didn't turn up any warnings in a brief internet search. She really seems to like it, but we don't feel comfortable leaving her with it. Currently it has gone away until such time as we hear that they're not going to kill her.

Thanks for the help!

Re: Chewing treats

The Farrier has been the most welcomed visitor at every barn I've ever been at. The dogs would just hang around waiting patiently for the prized hooves... Not one ever had a problem.

My dogs get kongs, nylabones (not the edible ones), frozen raw bones and antler chews. There's a whole thread on antler chews you might want to check out. They last forever, they don't smell or get all soft and gooey and the dogs love them.

Re: Chewing treats

Merrick actually packages hooves and sells them...so for those of you not in horse country, you can buy them at the store.

Baxter's really loving bully sticks these days. He'll knaw on them for hours, but they are a big stinky.
