Question Food and bathroom problems

I have a great dane named Merlin.

He has bad diahrrea. He has since he was a little puppy. We have changed his food about 4 times, giving enough time between changing, and we are now on Blue Buffalo. The vet suggested feeding him Activa yougurt, and we tried that. What can I give him that will plain just stop the diahrrea?

Re: Food and bathroom problems

That's a question only your vet could answer.

Re: Food and bathroom problems

If your vet has been involved with this for four months, and it's not fixed, you need to find another vet. This is a very serious problem.

The most logical reason I can think of, and the first thing I would eliminate is a food allergy. Lots of dogs have them and this is a classic symptom due to wheat or possibly corn. And, lost of vets miss this diagnosis. But, this does not excuse your vet from letting this go on so long. There may also be something more serious going on but I would rule out an allergy of some sort first.

You might try switching to a hypo allergic food, such as IVD venison and potato. It's a prescription food available only through the vet. Make the switch very slowly, increase new food with old carefully, you don't want to make things worse. If this is a food allergy, it could take up to 6 weeks before you see complete results. Generally, things get normal quicker. Your vet should also give you a med to get the diarrhea under control.

Ask the vet for timing on the medications. Find out how long it will be before you see positive results, ask for a date. If vet does not know or switches meds more than once, he/she does not know what is going on.
