| Good Food at Petco I'm looking at the foods at my local petco to feed to my dog and my parents dogs (who are switching from ol' roy @_@) All have received decent star rating from dogfoodanalysis.com but I was curious about person opinions about the food. Currently I'm using the Natural Balance Duck and Potatoe and am pretty happy with it, Ideally I'd like to switch food every 6 months or so just to give the dogs a change of pace.
my dogs are:
7 month old boston terrier (has had trouble with allergies)
5 year old overweight springer spaniel mix
9 year old artherdic rottweiler (on glocosmine every morning for stiffness)
The foods I've been looking at are:
Blue Buffalo (4 stars)
Natural Balance (4 stars)
Nutro (3 to 4 stars)
Pinnacle (unknown)
Solid Gold (4 to 6 stars)
I am hoping to find a food that I can buy the same for all of the dogs, Petco has a 10% discount if you buy 200 lbs and also every 10 bags I buy I get a free bag, so I'd like to buy from there. I think these are better foods at a reasonable price, I can't afford too much since I have to pay for all three dogs food myself. |

| Re: Good Food at Petco I perosnally feed Solid Gold and love it. It's a great food, yet it's not to to rich for his stomach. I've had Teddie on Solid Gold Hund-N-Flocken for 2-3 months and everything has been great.
I've thought about using Inova; it's a really good food and I've heard a lot of people that use it love it and so do their dogs.
Scratch my last comment.

| Re: Good Food at Petco If you remove the Blue Buffalo and the Nutro from your list you've got some good choices.
Between Natural Balance, Pinnacle and Solid Gold there are enough different formulas available from each brand that you'll have quite a bit of variety.
I personally don't consider Nutro to be that great a food - I know lots of people feed it and it works for them. It's just my personal opinion.
Blue Buffalo is overpriced for the quality. Again, my personal opinion. |

| Re: Good Food at Petco I like all of the foods you listed, with Nutro being at the bottom, but still good. (All but their Max line.) I would do a feed trial and see which your dogs do best on. You may find they thrive on different formulas. |

Wow! I never saw Pinnacle on any recall lists - how'd I miss that one?
Can you send me a link to the list you saw it on, please? |

Can you send me a link to the list you saw it on, please? | I'm sorry; I must have misread a comment posted on a recal listing site. Forgive me and my slowness.
After going back through and reading it over I am at fault.
EDIT: I've taken it out of my above post. |

| Re: Good Food at Petco I like natural balance the best out of the group only because I worry about my little boston Kari having a reaction to it being too rich.
Nutro most of the staff at petco seem to swear by but I don't think its that great of food. And I really don't like how pushy the person who comes to the store is (to show Nutro) she knows a lot less than me about food and she's the one to try and sell it lol And blue seems to have decent food, its about the same price as NB but I've never seen it anywhere but in Petco.
I think I am going to switch between Solid Gold and NB formulas, we're on the duck and potatoe now and I think the next 200lbs will be the NB new venison formula, has anyone tried it? I was excited because its grainless! yay lol. Any other suggestions of good solid gold or NB formulas that you've had good luck with?
Also, with those food should I add any suppliments? Someone said the suppliment 'Missing link' is a good idea but if I'm feeding good food thats all I should need, right? |

| Re: Good Food at Petco well, i dont feed any of those, and 2 maybe 3 of them, i probably wouldnt ever feed them. just because i dont like the ingredients. if you decide to look into any other foods, and you have a pet supplies "plus" around you, i would check them out. they tend to have the lowest prices on foods because they arent a HUGE store. they are carrying better brands everytime i go in there too... chicken soup, wellness, merrick...etc. Im VERY happy to see a store thats not a specialty petstore carry good foods. |

| Re: Good Food at Petco I've had Lilly on the NB brands. She didn't care for the dry food but LOVES the NB rolls. I switched her dry kibble to Solid Gold and I'll say that's by far my favorite for her so far (and her fav, too, based on how excited she gets at feeding time). Both Petco and Pet Supplies Plus sells these types, so should be pretty easy to access. Oh, and both brands have helped my Lilly w/ her allergies. |

| Re: Good Food at Petco Our Petco now carries Eagle Pack which is a great food and probably not as $$$$$ as Natural Balance. I believe they also carry Breeder's Choice and Nature's Recipe which are foods worth trying |

| Re: Good Food at Petco I learned the hard way (after spending tons of money, time and frustration) that food that is other than top quality can have a very detrimental effect on a dogs health. Mainly in the form of allergies and weight issues, but there are numerous others.
I feed IVD, venison and potato. It has no grains, is easy to digest, and I'm convinced my old girl that I lost almost two years ago cheated death three times because of the good diet.
You won't find it in any store though.

| Re: Good Food at Petco My dog did great on Nutro Natural Choice, then Ultra for several years. (I switched cause eventaully he got bored of it.) Although I have moved up the food ladder (currently feeding Timberwolf), I still recommend Natural Choice it to people who want a higher quality, but reasonably priced food. Ultra was good too, but for the price, I think you can probably do better. Petco also has a food called Caster and Pollox UltraMix. It is really good as well. |

| Re: Good Food at Petco My pup is on NB Duck and Potato too and he seems to LOVE it. I say this because I had thought he wouldn't eat dry kibble. Part of it may have been that he was a new dog. But no matter what I tried he wouldn't touch it unless it was mixed with wet. Well I switched him to NB b/c of suspected allergies and one night I didn't add the wet food for whatever reason and he wolfed it down so fast I was worried he wasn't bothering to chew. I still add wet to spoil him and I try to switch the canned between the duck formula and the fish formula because I think fish is supposed to be very good for dogs. He seems pretty happy and healthy, which is all I can ask for... |

| Re: Good Food at Petco i dont like NB for a few reasons. but mostly number one is that the first ingredient is POTATOES. wait....uh, your first few ingredients should be your meats....not only is that the first ingredient but then its listed AGAIN but at potato FIBER. then, CANOLA OIL.... why is that the 3rd ingredient! how MUCH is oil! out of the first 5 ingredients, i only am happy with 2 of them, but im not happy about their placing.
i do like the NB rolls though. the only thing i will say is be careful with duck, its rich, and some dogs dont do so well with that. if youre not sure, try a LITTLE bit of it. or just stick with turkey and chicken...easier meats.
i just switched from chicken soup to eagle pack. ive fed eagle pack before and its a good food, as is chicken soup, but i like to have a few good foods i really like and rotate them. |

| Re: Good Food at Petco I think finding a food that works for all three that is the same formula might prove to be difficult, but I do think the Petco offer does let you mix and match as long as the weight is 200 pounds, but you will have to ask them. It would effect the free bag program, as you would have to purchase 10 bags of each type of food to qualify for that. |
