When to switch from puppy to adult food?

Our rescue "pup", that we think is a hound/rott mix, is growing like a horse. At the vets yesterday he tipped the scales at right around 50 pounds - at 5.5 months. He was 11 pounds when we got him at 2.5 months and 35 pounds at 4 months. He's lost all his puppy teeth and the vet said he is 100% healthy and proportioned. She also remarked at how shiny and healthy his coat was which we were happy about. But it got me to wondering - though after leaving the vets of course - when do most of you stop feeding him the puppy formulas of each food and go with the adult formula?

Re: When to switch from puppy to adult food?

Hi midnight! congrats on your rescue

Our pup is 6 months and 60 pounds. I read the labels for both puppy food and adult dog food, and the only difference I can see is the protein %. I feed some meats and canned food, so I have already switched to adult food.

Now, people will say that there are nutrients in large breed puppy food that they need until 1 year, but I can't find where those are listed on the bag. Glucosamine is for joint growth, but you can give that as a supplement.

There's no reason why you can't switch now. A lot of breeders of large breed dogs don't feed puppy food at all, to avoid rapid growth and the stresses on joints.

with a dog that large, you really shouldnt feed puppy food at all. there is too much protein in it. try using a large breed adult food, there is less protein and that leaves less room for any growth problems.
