| Feeding puppy HI!! Right now I feed my dog, a Shi Tzu three times a day..he's 8 months. When can I switch to feeding him twice a day? Is there a certain age or size he should get to?

| Yeah.. Yeah i've read, that u feed them 3 times a day {for pups} from 2 to 6 months, then 2 times for they rest of their yrs. But thats MO, u should check on the back of the dogfood, it should tell u when to which from puppy food to adult food, and how much to feed them |

| The back of the bag is a bad thing to go from. It usually suggests that you feed TOO MUCH, etc. I would call a vet, tell them what breed you have, how old he is, and see what they think about it. |

| Hi, I think your fine to switch two times now. Also what do ya'll think about free feeding dogs rather than specific times. We free feed our 2 and they really don't over eat at all. They actually eat less than what you would expect. They never eat a bunch because they know it's there. I also think it helps because if they are on a schedule and you can't be home it messes them up. The down side is they only eat out of one bowl. Unless we give them the food in their crates they will always eat out of the same bowl. When we put food in the crates, they just make a mess in the crates. They are coming to a point where he will switch to adult food and she still has about 5 months to go. Also we can not tell how much each has eaten, just the total they ate. |

| We free feed Daisy and she eats when she wants which is usually in the mornings and evenings. She never over eats and she's not overweight. It works well for us because we usually leave for work pretty early and we don't always get home at the same time every day. We did not want to put her on a schedule because of that. |

| Oh Yeah we used to do that with my sheltie Snickers, it worked fine, he never over ate either, but the thing that was kinda questioning us, was that if the food ever got spoiled or not, but i think with Basil we are going to try feeding times, just 2 see how that works |

| Eevee became overweight when I free-fed her. It was also impossible to feed her if other dogs were around because she'd leave the food sitting there and they'd eat her food. I think it's easier to just feed in meals, and she's no longer overweight.
Not all dogs do "fine" when free-fed. |

| You're not likely to find a vet who will recommend free feeding either. I like to think of it this way...if I want my dog to poop on schedule, I better feed her on a schedule. |

| i used to free feed and now i no longer do. one dog was fine and the other would only eat when i got home. buuuut since we free feed he would eat alot and got fat. now that i have and almost 8 month bull headed dominate if you let him rottie there is feeding in the morning and evening. free feeding for some dogs only caused bad behaviour and some agression. but when they depend on you as the food source it can make management quite easyer.(sorry for the spelling) |

| You need to read the bag carefully. Sometimes they give a DAILY amount. If you feed more often, you need to divide the total daily intake by the number of feedings. Many dogs do well with one feeding a day. |
