Raw Meaty Bones..

Where is everyone getting their raw bones?

None of our local grocers will give them away anymore..nor sell them.

The grocery store or raw feeding co-op.

Re: Raw Meaty Bones..

Have you tried a butcher, slaughterhouse, or meat processing company? You can also check with restaurants to see where they order their meat from. Often the suppliers will let you buy product by the case (usually about 40 pounds). We also have an agriculture program at our local university that has a farm. They slaughter their own animals and process them for sale to the public. They have been providing the bulk of my meat and bones lately. If you see any ads in your area for home grown beef I would call and ask them where they have their meat processed. You could also ask them if you could have the stuff that would be disposed of anyway. And lastly, poultry RMB's (whole birds, leg quarters, etc) can always be found at my local groceries and Walmarts.

However, if you are only looking for large recreational bones I would try the above sources, look for bone-in roasts (you can always cut the meat off and eat it if you don't feed raw), even beef back ribs (the long ones) if your dogs aren't large breeds.

Re: Raw Meaty Bones..

Mine are almost all from the grocery store. It took a while, but I found a chain store in an ethnic area that sells RMBs at great prices, plus I've started buying my own meat there as well. I find lamb ribs for $1.99 there, which is as low as they've been since I started in late 2001. Chicken leg quarters are frequently .59lb - and its very high quality meat! Whole Perdue chickens for between .89-.99lb When you shop for meat & meaty bones, always consider quality before price. I used to get my leg quarters at a different store for .59lb, but they were old, low quality and always gave my dogs the runs. The meat I buy at the new store is good enough for me to eat myself.

As a side note, RMBs are the staple of a raw diet but please don't forget the muscle & organ meats - they're just as necessary and often left out too much in BARF style diets.

I'm not really looking to switch to BARF, however.. Should that stop me from offering RMB's?
