Smile Homemade meals...what chicken do I use?

I'm making my english bulldogs food consisting of roasted chicken, steamed brown rice or barley or quinoa, assorted veggies. I buy chicken from the grocery store. This is getting expensive! Does anyone else out there make their dog's food like this and if so, what chicken are you using?

I normally wait for the foster farms to be on sale and spend about $5-6 per chicken. A whole chicken lasts about 6 meals. Any advise on this subject would help me out. I'm thinking of switching to something like "Honest Kitchen". Thanks! I just joined today and am excited about exploring the boards. I've already learned a lot! I'll be adding pumpkin to her meals for sure!!!

I use the dehydrated honest kitchen products. Lilly likes the Force and their new one with quinoa. Even with it though I add cooked meats and veggies. I also mix it with her kibble. Lilly is only 6 pounds so one chicken breast goes a long way! I use only chicken breast, but b/c she is so fit and trim I have been knows to use both white and dark meat.

Prices can vary according to where you live, but I am usually able to find chicken for one dollar or less a pound. I've bought whole chickens, chicken quarters and even drumsticks, it just depends on what's available and the what's the cheapest, I'm not rich. Look at your weekly ads to see where the sales are, and sometimes you can find chicken pretty cheap at ethnic stores, it just depends. I usually get my chicken from the local Fiesta Mart down the street, they almost always have some for less than $1 per pound.

You could also ask your local grocery if they can order case lots of chickens for you. They usually come 20-40 pounds per case. If the grocery guy can't help you try to find the local meat wholesaler who supplies the restaurants in your area. They will often sell case lots as well.

Thank you for the great suggestions! Definitely got my wheels turning! This is a great board! I hope more dog "owners" will start feeding REAL food to their dogs instead of processed food. You WILL notice the difference! Thanks for helpingme!
