Farts that can clear a room!

Since we bought Tanner, we've been through a variety of dog foods to sort out allergies. She came fed on Blue Buffalo chicken and rice, which gave her terrible stinky farts, very loose stool, and neverending itching and licking. Then she went to Nutro Ultra chicken, Solid Gold Hund-n-Flocken lamb, Wellness fish & sweet potato. Wellness gave her the worst sloppy poo, ever. She was on each food at least one month, each time gradually introduced to it.

She's now on Evo chicken small bites, and that seems to be the best so far. But she's still got gas that can clear a room. It's not every day, but maybe once every other day. She's been to the vet, had her anal glands expressed, and otherwise checks out O.K.

Maybe she's just a naturally gassy dog? (I've heard some dog breeds are nortorious for breaking wind.) Is there anything I can give her so she doesn't scare guests away?

Yup, some dogs are just natural born farters.

You could try adding a high-quality probiotic that's designed for dogs (not humans!) to Tanner's diet, and see if it doesn't help the problem. It certainly wouldn't hurt. Look for a probiotic that requires refrigeration - they tend to be more "active" and potent.

Here's a good one:

Here's one we're using right now:

Also, I notice that although you've been rotating her off different foods she's mainly been getting chicken. It often helps to completely rotate the type of protein, not just the type of food. If she doesn't stay well on the Evo you could try switching her to a completely different protein than she's had before, such as venison or rabbit, with a single carb such as potato.

Hope that helps. Maybe you guys need to invest in some gas masks?

My guess would be that its the food only b/c of my experience with my cat. He was on kitten chow until about 9 months old and had the most unbelieveable gas I have ever smelled! I didn't know cats had gas like that! When we switched his food....no more gas. Night and day.

You can also try giving some active culture yogurt if you don't think it will cause more allergy problems. Look for the Plain, not vanilla. It usually does the trick and you don't need to give much of it.

This topic makes me laugh every time I see it.

Teddie is imo a natural born farter. He sleeps in my bed and he has the nerve to fart there too . He can wake me up out of a sound sleep in the middle of the night. He will also do so if he's not gone to the bathroom yet. Although he burps after every meal too. He's starting to sound more and more like a human boy every day.

Since you took her to the vet and she's been checked out it sounds more like she may just be a natural farter.

I have a natural born tooter too, so don't feel bad. Although the smell is horrible, we always laugh when he does it, b/c he runs from it his ownself! We always know it has happened b/c he looks at his behind like somebody did something TO him and gets up and leaves the room, usually walking by us and trailing the smell!
