| Treat suggestions for allergy dogs My puppy, Lilly, has been having food allergy issues. I've changed her kibble to Natural Balance Sweet Potato & Fish but I'm not sure what do give her for treats and chews now. I'm trying to avoid chicken and grains (wheat, soy, etc.). I know of fresh fruits and veggies and things like peanut butter in the kong, etc. but as far as chews I"m trying to get some ideas together. Just wondered if anyone has some suggestions or brands they like. Thanks. |

| Re: Treat suggestions for allergy dogs For chews, I use bully sticks and rmb's. So long as Lily can tolerate beef, either one will do a good job of entertaining her and cleaning her teeth at the same time. If you're worried about raw, just try the bully sticks. Unlike rawhide, they are pure protein and completely digestible. Of course, any chew requires supervision. Hope that helps. |

| Re: Treat suggestions for allergy dogs Until you know what the allergies are I would try the firmer vanilla or white nylabones (not the edible one) or one of the plain white sterilized bones you can buy at the pet store. You can stuff something in the center of it and the dogs think it's great. I'd stay away from bully sticks because a) you don't know if it's a beef allergy b) bully sticks are a processed item similar to rawhide and the chemicals may cause problems.
Try pieces of raw carrots for a healthy chew treat.
As someone else already mentioned, NB makes a Fish and Sweet Potato that goes with their kibble. hey also have a duck and potato biscuit. Buddy Biscuits also makes hypo allergenic treats. They have peanut butter, sweet potato, veggie, and molasses.
I also use the frozen raw bones from Primal they have bison bones which is another good choice for dogs with allergies.

| Re: Treat suggestions for allergy dogs Thanks for the great ideas. I didn't realize NB carried these new treats. Actually, I didn't realize there were so many varieties of hypoallergenic dog treats. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I just checked out a few online pet stores (kvvet, petfooddirect, etc.) since I can't find anything like that in my area and found some options. I see there's also a Dr. Chew's sweet potatoe chews. Might be a possibility, too. I'm going to order today. Will keep ya posted on what works and what doesn't. Thanks again for all the tips!!! |

| Re: Treat suggestions for allergy dogs My Lilly loves sweet potato chews. I make my own now in my food dehydrator....much cheaper. I also go to privately owned food stores and am able to find natural treats that does not contain what she is allergic to.
I have great luck with flossies, lamb trotters and bully sticks for long lasting chew time. For quick treats I make my sweet potato slices, bits of chicken, slices of carrot or apple. I have also taken ground lamb, mixed with oats or rice, somethng apple bits, etc... rolled into tiny balls and baked in the oven till brown then cool and keep in a ziploc. |

What is your Lilly allergic to? I just ordered some Natural Balance Lamb rolls to add to her food. I'll have to try rolling it in apples or other fruits and veggies, like you mentioned. How long do you bake them? Thanks! |

| Re: Treat suggestions for allergy dogs I make my own treats, here is a simple recipe and I think these ingredients should be ok. I prepare cup of brown rice according to microwave directions. After this cools I mix in two raw eggs and I add the grinded shells. I add one can of evangers 100% meat. I drop this by small spoonfuls on a cookie sheet and bake for about 30-40 mins. at 375. It makes a large quantity. I freeze them in a ziploc and take out what I need each day. I also make these treats with whole wheat flour but I think the recipe with the rice would be better for a dog that is having allergies. |

I cannot feed her beef but am able to give her bully sticks with no problem. I don't really have a recipe per say with a definite time. I put them in at 300 and set the timer for an hour and check on them every so often after that until they seem to be firm and chewy |
