Dog food for recovering mom....

I have recently adopted (or will have adopted) a female husky/german shepherd who had a litter of puppies weaned in July. She weighs approx. 40lb and has her full weight back. Her hair is lackluster and missing in a few spots because she was not receiving the proper nutrition to support puppies initially. She was a stray found pregnant behind a shed. She has been checked by the vet and has a clean bill of health; of course, she is still recovering from the stresses of pregnancy. The current foster owners have her on Hill Science Diet: Nature's Variety (yuck); I intend on gradually switching her to one of the following - granted she isn't allergic to the ingredients:

- Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul
- Solid Gold Bison
- Timberwolf Organics Lamb and Venison

Should one of these suffice or should I have her puppy food for additional nutrients? Any additional input is welcomed.

On a side note, she has a sable coloration and I look forward to seeing her up to full strength and a shiny coat; she will be gorgeous.

im just switching my pup to Chicken Soup... so i cant say anything about it yet, but i have heard good things about it. i dont really know about the other two foods. i just posted a thread called "how to read the ingredients on dog food" (or something to that effect, i cant remember what i titled it already lol!) look through there, especially at the bottom where it explains what certain ingredients do, that might help you to decide. you can match up some ingredients with qualities you want your dog to get from it. such as luster in the coat. good luck, and bless you for adopting her! thats awesome!

Re: Dog food for recovering mom....

Chicken soup did wonders for my dogs coats. Our oldest had a litter of pups as well when we got her. When we got her she was a bit underweight with a bit of a dull coat. Chicken soup really helped bring her weight up to normal and helped her coat.

Now, BEFORE we were on chicken soup our middle dog had a dull coat and a bit of dandruff. So we would put about a tsp of cod liver oil in her food. That really really helped her

I think the TO Black forest kibble would be the best out of those you mentioned. They do have another nutrient dense labeled formula (the lamb, barley and apples), but I think the Black forest is just as good or better. You could even add a little of their salmon oil to the food to further balance out her omega ratio and really give her coat a great shine. She sounds like she's gonna be a real beauty.

I did not have good luck with Solid Gold, I used wolf king. It made my dog sick, and she didn't want to eat it most of the time. I chucked it and ordered some timberwolf organics. Love the product and so does she. She doesn't get sick any more.
