| What commercial kibble to add to homemade food My dogs are now eating a diet of 50% homemade and 50% commercial kibble. After all the dog food scares I became very conscious of what I have been feeding and I still feel like I am learning.(I confess I was feeding kibbles-n-bits in the past...some good things came out of the food scare) Anyway, I am reading alot of good things about solid gold. Presently I am using california naturals and solid gold for the kibble. I would like to make a commitment to one kibble. I am thinking that since I do add homemade food consisting of meat (main ingredient), carb and vegi maybe I should look at a kibble that is lower in protein. I was considering using solid gold holistique blendz for the kibble, this has lower levels of protein. Anyone have any suggestions or experience that they can share with me, it would be appreciated. I am feeding an 11 year old basset hound and a 1 1/2 year old westie/cairn mix. (I do add several other things to the homemade mix...small amount of liver or sardines, sea kelp, brewers yeast, probiotic yogurt) |

| Re: What commercial kibble to add to homemade food Sorry, I don't have an answer for you. I've been using Canida for about seven months and even that is not completely without controversy.
Mostly I'm curious about why, every time somebody mentions solid gold, it shows up as a link.
Edit:
What the heck? Looks like it's time to do a spyware search and destroy.
Is solid gold a link for everybody? |

| Re: What commercial kibble to add to homemade food I know Purina One is a midline dog food. My dogs have pretty sensitive stomachs so switching them right now is out of the question until Maycie gets older and they go to adult dog food. The vet said to put both on puppy so that Maycie doesn't try to get into Sophie's food.
They do well with the Purina Puppy food. There are some above that though and I'm constantly doing research as well as to what I could feed them. Sorry I don't have much to offer advice wise. I'm pretty much in the same boat as you!! Good luck! |

Solid Gold is a great food, one of the best kibbles around. So if your already feeding it, and your dogs are doing well I would stick with it.
There aren't too many kibbles that are better than it, and you won't have to phase a new food in. |

| Re: What commercial kibble to add to homemade food I think if I remember correctly, the solid gold holistic blend is actually formulated with the lower protein to be used with raw or home cooking.

| Re: What commercial kibble to add to homemade food One of the nice things about the Holistique is that it's formulated with slightly higher calcium so you can add simply fresh meat without having to worry about balancing it with added calcium. The EVO brands are all like this as well (it's one of the reasons EVO is not suitable for large breed pups, too much calcium).
I'm pretty sure you can do half and half (calculated by total calories required for the day).
I do half kibble and half raw meaty bones. Ish. I also add some goodies like meat stew to the kibble but that's more for fun. Oh, and fish twice a week at least. And a fresh egg with shell about once a week. We just kind of have fun with it, but I've been doing this for a while so I've got a feel for what works and is healthy. |
