| Canidae tests positive for acetaminophen?? Fact or Fiction I have no idea if this is true or not and would like some help because my puppy has just switched to Canidae. I certainly don't want to alarm but I followed the links and it does look like one person sent food in and they tested positive. The company hasn't tested yet.
I asked my pet store about it, showed them the article that mentions Canidae and Innova and the clerk said to the manager, "Is this why we haven't been getting any shipments from Canidae"?
Here is the info, my sister got it from her maltese group. They pasted it and it looks like it came from

Canidae tests positive for acetaminophen
Posted: 04 Sep 2007 08:38 PM CDT
Yet another brand of pet food (not recalled) has tested positive for acetaminophen. These two bags of pet food, purchased in early July, were sent to Expertox, by a pet owner, for testing.
The positive test result was on a composite of the two following Canidae Dry Foods.
a.. Canidae All Life Stages Dry Dog Food
RM 6/7/07, use by 6/7/08
a.. Canidae (All Life Stages) Lamb and Rice Formula Dry Dog Food
RM 6/6/07, use by 6/6/08
Test results can be found on Pet Food Recall Facts. |

| Re: Canidae tests positive for acetaminophen?? Fact or Fiction Am I reading that right? One owner, 2 bags of different food tested positive? That is strange. My food rep said nothing. He sells a lot of Canidae. My dogs are on something else but I have been known to rotate with Canidae. I sure hope it is not true. |

There is a report on non recalled foods that have tested positive to different things.
I hope it's not true too but just in case, I already bought Fromms because it is made in a town (Wisconsin) that is a few hours from me. I called and they said they only use USA products for dry but do use China for wet food. |

Expertox says the results were inconclusive because the sample was sent to the lab in a Ziploc bag. Internet reports say that the two formulas that were tested were from Canidae. The lab cannot verify the sample received is the actual product claimed unless the sample is received in an unopened, sealed, untampered can or bag.

I say fiction. |

| Re: Canidae tests positive for acetaminophen?? Fact or Fiction I say fiction. Think about it. Whoever sent in the sample may have contaminated the food with acetaminophen, for whatever reasons, but the likelihood of the petfood company putting this in their food is pretty remote, IMO. |

| Re: Canidae tests positive for acetaminophen?? Fact or Fiction I would keep an eye on this, but avoid panic.
Internet rumors spread like wildfire.
I bought a large bag of Canidae yesterday and I don't plan on returning it based on a few blog posts. But I will be watching.
BTW, acetaminophen is dangerous for dogs, but much more so for cats. |

It never really made a difference to me because what applies to one animal applies to all in my house to avoid possible confusion. For example, dogs can't have chocolate so my cats can't have it either sort of thing. But its interesting to find out that its bad for dogs also. |

| Re: Canidae tests positive for acetaminophen?? Fact or Fiction ConsumerAffairs.com had a more balanced and informative report on this: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news0...recalls71.html
A few points that caught my eye...
- the food could not be confirmed as Canidae because it arrived in a ziploc baggie, it was merely claimed to be Canidae by the person who paid for the tests
- this lab has tested other brands of food this year which also resulted in positive tests for acetaminophen, one following the death of a cat
- the FDA disputed these test results but couldn't verify that they tested the same lot numbers or even the same brands
- Canidae hasn't returned Consumer Affairs' phone calls (which doesn't look good on them, I must say, but who knows how long they've had to respond) |

| Re: Canidae tests positive for acetaminophen?? Fact or Fiction Thanks for the help. It's a marketing nightmare for Canidae. I hope it's not true and I feel bad for the company in that case.
I switched and that is what they don't want, a brand new puppy owner to lose confidence. But, I am happy to buy a brand made in my state anyway.
I will continue to watch too. |
