Question Are garlic and onion really fatal to dogs?

I saw on the News "Dangerous food/items around house for your pet". They said garlic and onion are fatal to dogs. Is this true?

When I was growing up in Korea, there was no such thing as kibbles so dogs were fed all the left overs, which contained lots of garlics and onions. Dogs were just fine eating them. So TV reports contradicts what I know.

What do you think?

Re: Are garlic and onion really fatal to dogs?

Allium species toxicosis most commonly occurs after oral consumption. In addition to consuming fresh plant material, consuming juice, fresh and aged dietary supplements, powdered cooking preparations, dehydrated material, or food preparations derived from or containing Allium species can be potentially toxic to dogs and cats.1 Allium species toxicosis typically ensues after consumption of a single large quantity of the material or repeated small amounts. Dogs and cats are highly susceptible to onion toxicosis: Consumption of as little as 5 g/kg of onions in cats or 15 to 30 g/kg in dogs has resulted in clinically important hematologic changes. Onion toxicosis is consistently noted in animals that ingest more than 0.5% of their body weight in onions at one time.

Garlic, given in moderation is actually very healthy for your dog. Depending on the size of the dog you'd only give at most one clove of garlic a few times a week

Re: Are garlic and onion really fatal to dogs?

I have dog treats that contain garlic powder, so I'm assuming that it's safe...?

small amounts of garlic are safe, its in a great deal of "organic" dog food. They claim that its a natural deterrant to bugs bothering them.

I have always read that onions are toxic to both cats and dogs.
