Well, you've hit the nail on the head: if they're not having problems, the dog is healthy, and the vet hasn't recommended a change... then no, there isn't anything wrong with it.

But it all depends on the dog, of course. As a very general rule of thumb, I would recommend 2x daily feedings for average, healthy adult dogs. This works especially well for those of us who are monitoring intake, give meds/supplements that must be taken with meals, or have dogs who are chow hounds and would otherwise eat themselves silly.

And for my two rescues, it was key that they get onto a daily schedule. They came from very insecure, unstable environments and for them to learn that there is an established routine to our days was extremely helpful. They eat at certain times, exercise at certain times, go for a w-a-l-k at certain times... they were able to relax and become calm, well-mannered house dogs because they weren't always wondering what would happen next.

Re: constant available food

I want to know what my dogs are eating, how much, and when. It's next to impossible to know that when free fed. ESPECIALLY with multiple dogs! I'm single, so I need to know these things not only for monitoring their health, but so I know what time I need to get home so their bladders aren't screaming for relief! Otherwise, I'd be a prisoner held in my home (or come home to piles of poop)!

Re: constant available food

My family has always free fed the dogs, they say the 'feed' them twice a day but as soon as the food is eaten in the bowl they replace it. It has always worked for the dogs at their house and the dogs are very well behaved.

That being said my puppy is fed 3 times a day right now, its easier to house break a pup knowing when about she'll poop. Also it makes me feel more comfortable knowing how much my pup eats because it is a clear sign if a puppy leaves a bowl full or even 1/2 full. (either she's sick or daddy obviously fed her something from the table ) lol
