Feeding Raw Changing to New Protein?

Hey,
I have been feeding raw now for about 3 weeks. We started on Chicken and everything is going pretty good. She is a 3.5yr old mix Shepherd with IBS that is why we went to raw and WOW what a difference. My problem now is when I try to give just a little of Red Meat (ground beef at first) she starts having a little more runner poo. Do I just keep giving a little bit for a few weeks or do I stop and try another protein source? Also how often do you give her the RMB's? I wasn't giving her any in the first week but started the second week and it was a little bumpy at first but she has really progressed nicely now and really enjoys the bone chewing. Also since she had the IBS for so long she has always been skinny and I want to start getting her gain a little more weight, you can really feel her ribs. What is the best protein for her to gain more weight? She is very active too! Thanks for any advice you have!!

I would hold off from the red meat and try another protein source. My dogs get their RMB's every meal. Use this food calculator http://www.raw4dogs.com/calculate.htm to see how much you should be feeding. It tells you on the site to put more weight on up the %.

I would try venison, rabbit, turkey or lamb before the beef---beef was the last protein I introduced to Riley and that was after rotating the other five (chicken, turkey, lamb, venison and rabbit).---Now I alternate between all six with no problems, actually I now find the beef now is more binding.

Re: Feeding Raw Changing to New Protein?

I would stick with the chicken, adding in chicken bony sections, if you haven't already. Instead of moving on to other proteins perhaps you could add a bit of organ meat to each meal (of the same protein source, chicken in this case) so that you are balancing some of the vitamins/minerals/amino acids that are present only in organs.

But start slow, just a dab the first time you try. Organ meat can make some dogs have a really runny stool when first introduced into the diet. You can usually find packages of chicken gizzards and hearts in the grocery store near the containers of chicken liver. And I'd hold off on the liver until you get going on the chicken organs. Liver is really known to give dogs the runs the first few times.
