Question first haircut

The best thing about Dory is how cute she is...I love her curly coat and pretty face.
We are bringing her to the groomer for the first time on Wednesday and I really don't want her to get some terrible cut.
How neurotic can I be about telling the groomer what I want? I don't want to appear over-bearing, but for $40, Dory had better come out looking great.

I really only want a little trim for her...she would be curlier and not so frizzy. Kind of like my hair!
Are there any buzz words I should use to explain what I want? Is it too much to bring in pictures?

Yes, don't ask for a schnauzer cut unless you want the schnauzer cut, lol. I'd say pictures would be an excellent idea. I'm not familiar with all the terms, but I would emphasis to your groomer that this is her first cut. Good luck, and please post a before and after pic.

Re: first haircut

Try to explain exactly what you want, and if you have pictures that's great. But, on the other hand, this is the first time to the groomer. Even if it's not exactly what you wanted try to stick with the same person next time. When you pick up the dog, if there's something you want different point it out. If it is something "too long" it can often be corrected with a pair of shears on the spot before you leave. If they've gone a bit too short, just mention it briefly,... hair does grow back. But when you get home, take a picture of the dog so that you can take it with you the next time and say "this was a bit too short, could you leave it a little longer this time please?" or whatever you would like different. Just be patient and pleasant.

pics r a grate thing we have clients that bring them it helps so much

tell them exactly what u want dont be shy lol its ur dog and ur money the more info the better i hate it when ppl dont tell me enough

also take a b4 pic and an after cute so u can see what they have done and next time u can say i like this bit but i didnt like this so much if u see what i mean

pups are hard to trim and sumtimes they dont look ace as they r like kids and they get tired and basicly fed up but the trim will look better the older the dog gets

Re: first haircut

A groomer can't give you what you want if you don't really know (even when you DO, they may not give you what you want!)! LOL A picture helps more than a description, but, let your groomer know what you want by writing it down (and leave it with her), and explaining to her when you drop Dory off.

Dory is a Poodle, right? Or a Poodle mix . . .there are various clips for Poodles, but I have to tell you, not all groomers know what you mean if you ask for a "Miami Clip" or a "Bikini Clip," which, BTW, is the SAME clip! LOL Do you want Poodle feet, or Teddy bear feet? Poodle feet are typically shaved to the skin, and the teddy bear feet are simply trimmed in a rounded fashion, without the nails showing. Do you want a Poodle face (again, shaved to the skin), or a mustache, or beard?

My guess, from what you said, is that you want a puppy clip so she's trimmed neatly, basically the same length all over the body, maybe a little longer on the legs, topknot, and tail. But, you're going to have to get specific with the groomer (i.e., body shorter than legs, face shaved or not, feet shaved or not, etc.).

I got so tired of trying to get a groomer to give my two Standard Poodles the clip I wanted (showed them pictures with detailed instructions on what blade, etc.) and they still didn't do what I asked, so, I invested $800 for professional equipment, and I now do it myself.

Dora is a little cutie! I'm sure she'll look darling whatever haircut the groomer gives her!

Re: first haircut

Thanks for the help everyone! I did get some pictures of what I like and what I don't like. My daughter is coming home from college on Thursday and we want Dory to look beautiful for her.
