Brushing pom

What type of brush/comb should I use just for everyday brushing to keep him looking neat and mat free?

His fur is very dry and coarse so I need something that will slide through easily without pulling.

Re: Brushing pom

You need a slicker brush and a greyhound comb.

A pin brush is a good starter brush, to be followed up with a slicker and greyhound come. A pin brush alone is not going to remove much undercoat, and its going to leave alot of knots that will turn into matts. If he is crying when you use a slicker, its either because you are not using it correctly, or he is just trying to get out of being brushed..and I have yet to see a pom that enjoyed being brushed..lol Unfortunately, unless you wanted a matted dog, he is going to have to learn to tolerate brushing and combing, and you are going to have to teach him how to accept it.

The problem is his hair is so unhealthy, frizzy, and rough. The slicker catches on the hair and pulls and gets stuck, even if its not tangled. I know it is hurting him. I can't brush his entire coat like that everyday. He is fine with being brushed when it doesn't hurt. I've already brushed out his undercoat, I just need to know what I can effectively use for daily brushing just to make it look not messy. I guess thats just how its going to look until he gets healthy.

Is there some kind of product I can put on his fur to tame it down in the meantime? Judging by how long it took Sandy's coat to respond (to the switch from purina puppy chow to a higher quality food), I figure its probably going to take at least a month or more for his fur to start getting healthy.

This is a dog who is 4.5 years old and has been neglected and abused for most of his life.

Re: Brushing pom

Start with just the greyhound comb then if his hair is fried

then follow up with a nice bristle brush.

That way you can remove the undercoat and start spreading those essential oils back into his damaged hair. You also might want to consider a fish oil suppliment for the coat or a tsp. of canola or olive oil on his food for conditioning, you can also try a show groom in additionto the internal suppliments to start working from the outside in.

...or shave him down and start over.

Re: Brushing pom

Thank you! I should have posted all those details to start with, sorry.

I was going to shave him down at first, but he really enjoys the outdoors, even in the pouring rain, so I don't want to take away his nice warm coat

I got a comb and bristle brush, they are working well. I also found my cats slicker brush which is plastic instead of meatal and working MUCH better!
