Puppy has recently started smelling

Hi, This is my first post. I have read a fair amount here and know someone here may be able to help, although I am not positive this is a grooming issue. Okay my dog smells, but this is a recent issue. He is somewhere between 10-11 months, I got him at eight months, but it was an estimate. The things that I have done recently that are different are wash him with Tropiclean Hypoallergenic puppy and kitten shampoo (which I also used on my older dog and he doesn't smell like this) and am transitioning him to Blue Wilderness from Evo red meat small bites. I realize the Blue is an adult food but the puppy is close and I have these high protein foods because my other dog was thought to possibly have cancer and now the vet thinks it is lymphosarcoma but that is another issue. He was very picky with intestinal issues for a while so the puppy is now eating his food.

The puppy did have a bout of throwing up one evening but that was it, a plant possibly. I did not find anything about the part he seemed to eat, mostly root area, being poisonous. He seems to have recovered. This is probably irrelevant but if it could possibly be internal it may carry some weight.

Okay so the first question is, could it be the food?- which from what I have learned it shouldn't be because it is high quality protein. He may need a little more fiber, which I started giving him today, so these two foods may not be the best foods for him in the future.

Secondly, could it be the shampoo? It is soap free and has coconut base shampoo and oatmeal in it.

Thirdly, as the Tropiclean rep stated, his body is or could be changing because he is getting older?

My other dog has never been real smelly so I don't know if they always smell from the beginning if they do smell or if they develop this smell as they age. I have washed him a lot lately too, which may be making it worse? Could he have some hound in him? I have wondered, based on some random what seem to be hound-like noises. Thank you.

Sassy used to stink and now mostly doesn't. Her anal sacs used to be full on a monthly basis and her ears used to have a small amount of gunk when I bathed her.

High protein food isn't a problem. One of the many perfectly wonderful ingredients could be. Perhaps one is bothering the pup?

Sassy switched to a home cooked very simple food and these improvements were a nice bonus. She also started a very powerful probiotic. I don't think it is that as she hasn't been taking it consistantly through the whole 2.5 years but try a probiotic. Eagle Pack sells one especially for switching foods and they are a good company from what I read on the net.

Check the anal sacs and look into a probiotic. Perhaps a simple food like California Naturals, Natural Balance allergy formulas or Wellness Simple Solutions could help too. I haven't used them but they are good foods.

Check the ears too. An ear infection can produce a real doggy odor. Maybe let the vet check the anal glands, ears, skin, and whatever else.

Bathing can lead to ear infections. I seldom if ever bathe a dog. Brush it every day with a soft bristled brush.

Re: Puppy has recently started smelling

Thanks for the replys. It may very well have to do with the Blue Wilderness, I think it started around then, I believe I started it last week or close to it. The only thing I see that it could be is the natural chicken flavor though. The smell isn't horrible most times and sometimes I have to get close to his fur. I think it is definitely coming from his fur. It kind of smells like liver. For now I guess I will try a different shampoo. He doesn't seem like he feels sick so that is good. I have a people liquid probiotic that I got for my other dog so maybe I will add some of that to his food and hope he doesn't have lactose issues. I am glad you don't think it is the food. I still love him even though he smells .

Are you sure it isn't the anal glands? Do you know how to express them?

I am not sure and no I don't. I think if the problem persists, I will have to take him to the vet if that is possibly what it could be. I may be overreacting. It may just be how he smells and the puppy shampoo is not washing the oils away as much. He has been pretty shiny though.
