DIY Grooming 101

Hi Everyone,
I am researching dog grooming because eventually I would like to groom my Bichon at home, however I am having a hard time finding good resources and basic information, even in this sub forum. I'm sure my questions will become more specific as I learn more, but for now I am really trying to find books, DVDs/VHSs, youtube videos, websites, links/threads on this site, anything that will set me off in the right direction.

Essentially I am looking for detailed information about grooming curly coats as well as types of cuts and the tools that will be needed. Thanks so much to everyone in advance.

some basic tools.

Clippers and blades
trimming shears
thinning shears
nail clipper
Finishing spray

I've never actually groomed a Bichon before so I wil leave it at that, I have seen it done though

Visit the bulletin board at groomers.net There is a wealth of info on there already, and hundreds of professional groomers ready to answer questions.

Twinkle,

I am in the same boat. I started about 9 months ago with my dogs. I would like to groom in my second career but for now I am having a lot of fun with my own dogs and some of my friends dogs. I started with the internet and then went to my local library and got every book and video they had on dog grooming. It is a good way to decide what kind of guide gives you the most information that you might want to own but from the library to test it out, its free. Most of the videos and books say the best thing to do it apprentice or start from the bottom up as a bather. I believe that many of the box stores like Pets Smart hire people and then train them, starting as a bather and moving up from there.

Best bet, start at your local library and scoop up all the books and videos you can find.

BBird's Groom Blog is great, especially for Bichon tips.
