My 6year old cherrier (terrier/chihuahua) does not like to have her nail trimmed but she will let my daughter paint them? But her nails really need trimmed. My 2male pugs don't mind having their nail done but I just don't know how offten I should be doing them.
It all depends on how much activity they're getting and what type of surfaces they're exposed to. If your dogs only know soft plush grass or carpet then they're going to need to have their nails trimed more offten then a dog that has hard surfaces for their nails to wear on. A general rule of thumb is that if you hear the nails start to click on tile or pavement them it's time for the nails to be trimed. When the dog is standing, with even weight on all four feet, none of the nails should touch the ground. Many vets will trim your dogs nails without an appointment, you may want to give your vet a call and see if they do and how much it is. Many owners tend to get scared that their going to hurt their dogs when they trim the nails and that fear can really freak out the dog and make it extreemly difficut for them to trim the nails. So if your dog hates getting a nail trim it may be best to take them to the vet or a professional groomer for a quick trim.
Depends on how fast they grow...I trim our dogs' nails (greyhounds) once every 7-10 days using a dremel. Long nails on a running dog can be big prolems!
