Exclamation Nail Trimming and Why is she good for the vet?

Okay I asked awhile back about what I should do because suddenly Sasha doesn't want me to trim her nails. Well she was at the vets getting her bodetella vaccine and we went ahead and had them trim her nails. Well before 4 people couldn't hold her down to get it done (and this is a 22 pound dog, not a big dog but she is strong) well we get her up on the table she struggles for a minute and then she lets them actually trim her nails no problem. What was that? She just laid there and let them do it. Way to make mom look bad. Anyways atleast its done and they suggested just continue working with her with the whole nail thing over time she will become more comfortable but they mentioned its the Jack Russell coming up in her. After all they are diggers and we are messing with her nails. But just to keep with the training.

Anyways what was that though? I know she is a drama queen but really. I'm not complaining I want her to be good at the vet.

By the way the other day we went to the park and as soon as she saw a group a people she plopped down and acted like she was dying. She is a real attention hog

I believe it is all in the human's attitude. Dogs seem to sense when you are not feeling in control of the situation and will sometimes take advantage of that. Be calm and know that you are in charge, it's time to trim nails now. Then just do it. I was having the same problem with all three of my dogs. I took one of them to my mentor's house and she just picked up the dog and did the nails, no fuss. The dog knew she meant to get the job done, and it was done without fuss.

WEll I can't physically trim her nails since she throws me and she bites when we hold her down. But she just sat there at the vets and barely had to hold her.

Hmmm, if dogs can act like this, maybe I should have a groomer have a run at Georgia's nails. The last time it took me and DH, and did not go well at all. I have a dremmel, but the noise bothers her. I ordered a cover for it and hope that having it covered will help Georgia get used to the tool so I can finally shorten her nails. But who knows how long that will take to arrive. If she makes it into daycare, I am going to ask them to try doing her nails (they have grooming too), even if they will only be able to top them off at this point.

Re: Nail Trimming and Why is she good for the vet?

My dachsie does the same thing. We had 3 people trying every way we could to get his nails trimmed and it was all in vain. I gave up and took him the the vet hospital i worked at and the tech just picked him up under his arm pits and he let her trim his nails just fine. I just the arm pit thing for him at home and it works fine for him. But whenever i bring him in to work for shots, a/g, or nail trim I have to be standing on the other side of the room or he'll start to act up.

My cat however is impossible at the vet, yet he'll let me do anything at home as long as I don't keep him from his fly hunting too long. It took 3 of us to get blood from him for his annual check-up. We had to use a butterfly catheter in his back leg and pray he didn't flinch until we got the 3 mls that we needed. If he was at home I would have been able to have my bf hold him and draw up just fine.
