confused about dog trimmers...please help

Hi all,

I have a very thick haired cocker spaniel who is in dire need of hair cut. Over the last few years we have been doing it ourselves because he doesnt like the groomers. Well, the other day our trimmer burnt out.

When we went to petco, they told me that we should be buying a two speed trimmer for his thick coat and not a regular trimmer. is this correct? my husband thought it was a ploy to have us buy the expensive trimmer, but they had none in stock and said we should look online.

is she correct by telling us we need a 2 speed for such thick hair? we've been using a one speed and getting burnt our trimmers.

thanks for your help

Most cockers are pretty thick, and I personally wouldn't use anything but a two speed on high on one. Lesser powered clippers aren't going to have the power to push thru that coat, and they will clog up the blade, dulling the blade and leaving clipper lines in the coat. If you want to do a good job on your dog, and have a clipper that will last, I would recommend an Andis Super 2 Speed AGC. Any clippers you can buy at Petsomethings are going to be junk IMO and not worth the money.

The Petsomthing I work at actually sells the Andis two-speed AGC. Granted, it's more expensive there then, say, Pet Edge.com. But...it's there. *wink*

Wow, thats awesome that your Petsomething has a decent clipper...I have yet to see anything worth having at our local ones... Not that I would buy them from there unless it was an emergency...lol I am sure the price is quite inflated in comparison to a supplier..
