a lot of people make the decision to get a corded breed b/c they think it is easier, but it is not. its harder in a lot of ways. most of my knowledge of cording is with pulis, b/c those are what i have experiance with, so other breeds may be different.
the cording starts when the adult coat comes in. it kid of does it naturally, but you help it along. cords are basically organized matts. once you see matts coming in, you start splitting them to the skin, so that each mat/cord is about 2 inches thick. it takes about 1-2 years for a good corded coat to grow out. pretty much everyday you have to go through the dog and separate the cords so that every cord is by itself and you can see skin between everyone. bathing is a whole other thing.it takes about 4 hours to correctly bath and dry a corded dog, and if you do it wrong or dont completely dry the dog, mildew will grow in the cords. i would definetely recommend a sanitary clip b/c the cord in the privates really start t stink of pee after only a couple of days.
at the kennel i work at, we get a full coat puli in every few months whose owners do not regularly maintain it. it takes us a week to seperate the cords before we can ever bath the dog, and we usully end up shaving some part of hime b/c it is too matted. i9t doesnt take long for the coat to get out of hand, and when you have to shave, starting over is even harder to keep separated. these dogs are a VERY high maintanance dog, more so than most, and are not right for everyone. |
