Yesterday when Snoopy went to the vet he had not done his morning poop so my grandma told them and asked if they take the dogs out to go potty. They said they didn't but it didn't matter as they could clean him up if he did. So is this common practice not take the dogs outside if they are going to be there all day?

My vet office does not take dogs out to go to the bathroom either. They are not an overnight clinic, though.

I did ask why, and they gave a good reason. They use to, until a dog got out of its collar, ran into the road...and got hit by the car. It died, and their nurse also got hit by a car chasing after it.

They don't want to be liable for any 'accidents' that could happen taking the dog outside. Good enough reason for me.

It depends on the office. If they have the people power to attend to the dogs, instead of as many clients as they can, then yes, some do take the animals out. But I'd say busier offices simply don't have the time, and would rather clean up the cages at an appropriate time.

yes and no.

i have worked in many provate salons, and know of many others, that have access to a yard and do walk dogs that are in their care.

at corporate salons, they do not let the dogs outside at all. this is b/c it is a huge liability. if a dog escapes b/c an employee takes it outside, the company would be screwed. the dogs are not allowed to leave the grooming area. im pretty sure it would be in the insurance policiy for other places as well. at the boarding kennel i currently work at, our insurance only covers incidents that occur on the property. im sure it is the same with many other places. the thing is, some places go around it by having a yard.

if the place doesnt do this, you shouldnt worry. ask them if they keep the dogs on raised platforms in the kennels/cages. this way, if the dog does go to the bathroom, it goes below them and they dont have to sit in it, and usually dont get messy. i have also found that many dogs who are completely potty trained do not actually go in the kennel/cage. as long as the dog isnt in there for more than about 4-5 hours, there shouldnt be any harm done.

This happened at the petsmart my sister worked at. Can you imagine how horrible that would be?

The vet I work at has a big backyard so when we walk dogs they can't get anywhere if they slip their leash. We always walk them on a slip leash anyway, but we have the fence as an added extra.

Places that have boarding and day care usually will...like at Zoe's day care, they have a grooming salon, and they take the grooming dogs out just like the day care ones. At her vet, they have a boarding kennel attached and will bring the dogs out. If a dog is too sick to be staying in the kennel (and stays in the sort of ICU), they are not brought out because they are usually on an IV anyway.

He is completly house trained, though he is not crate trained, completly. He is fine in the crate if he can see me but even if he can see me he starts to bark after a couple of hours.

The LAST time I took any of my dogs to a salon for grooming, she (cocker spaniel) was there from 7:30AM until 5:30PM and they never took her out. And they didn't tell me that.

I put her in the car and started for home. No sooner I got on the freeway and the dog let loose all over my sheepskin seat covers. I pulled over onto the shoulder of the road, attached her leash to a mile marker post, and tore the seat covers off...all covered with well...everything a dog normally does in the course of a day!

After that I bought my own dog clippers and have been grooming ever since.
