How much is too much shedding?

I may be paranoid, but....Gauge is shedding SO much. I woudn't be worried about it, especially since it could he his "fall" shed, but he has a couple of balding spots that I have just noticed. On both of his back legs where his "knees" are...you can see his skin...and then a couple of spots on his chest. The balding spots are pretty symetrical (if that makes sense) and not random on his body. He eats Chicken Soup, so I don't think it's his food and he is not scratching or licking himself, no rashes.. Any ideas? (The vet isn't open until Monday.)

Thanks!

The way you described it, it sounds more like hair loss rather than typical shedding, although a dog can shed more hair than people sometimes think. you say he eats chicken soup? what dog food does he eat? I am sorry but in my own personal opinion I don't feed my dog 'human food' she eats eagle pack and has for a long time after i noticed she has sensitivity towards wheat and corn. If it is shedding, the hair should grow back, I still suggest to check with a vet. I'd like to know what you find out. Shanette Peters/Aunty Noah's Pet Styling

Shanette: Chicken Soup is a Dog Food Brand.

Gauge: I doubt it's the Food It could be fungal, ringworm etc. I agree you should take him to the vet & maybe have a skin scraping done.

Thank you for the clarification on 'chicken soup'. I hadn't heard of it myself. Although some baldy areas can result from laying on cement or other hard areas too long, that probably isn't the case here, ringworm is possible, I'd like to know what your vet say's about it.

Re: How much is too much shedding?

What you describe sounds like symmetrical canine alopecia, and it can have any number of causes including those mentioned above. I agree you need to have your dog examined by a vet, who will probably take a skin scraping to properly diagnose the cause.

Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul dog food is what she is referring to

Gauge...have you been able to figure out what is going on? Were you able to get into the vet?
