Help with Nails and Ticks!

Okay, rescued a new Min Pin (6 years old/male).

His nails were not trimmed as frequently as they needed to be because they are quite long. Problem is: how do I trim such long nails when the "quick" has grown with them? Is there any way to get these nails back to a normal, comfortable legnth without causing the dog pain or bleeding?

Second issue: the dog has ticks. I bathed him in flea/tick shampoo, picked off all that I found, and then used a Hartz flea/tick spot-on treatment. Didn't work. Now, my other two Min Pins have ticks, as well as my couches, carpet and bed. I've sprayed the carpet and couches with flea/tick spray, vacummed, changed the sheets, and spot-treated all three of them with K9 Advantix. The ticks are still there! Any suggestions?

I can't imagine a min pin would have enough ticks to infest your other dogs AND home. Are you sure it's ticks? Ticks usually attach themselves to a host and don't let go until they get all fatted up, then they drop off. Fleas are smaller little buggers that can jump from dog to dog.

Unfortunately, they're ticks. I put two of them in a ziploc and took to the vet with me. She identified them as Brown Dog Ticks and then gave me the Advantix.
