Ear Cleaning Issues

My Great Pyr pup has really dirty ears all the time! She rolls around in the grass every once and a while, but I have been cleaning her ears about twice a week now because they get brown.

Is this normal?? She is generally an indoor dog, but with plenty of play time outside and walks... but I just don't know why her ears get so dirty so fast! My Pekingese hasn't been groomed in about 2 months now and his ears are close to perfection! She also isn't shaking her head so I'm not really suspecting mites.

Any thoughts??

Re: Ear Cleaning Issues

I have four dogs and i'm forever cleaning out their ears. If i don't, two of my dogs will get an ear infection fast. The two most suseptable to ear infections roll around in the grass or dirt everyday. Cleaning ears is as much a part of my daily routine that they just line up when they see me bring out my stuff. the dogs love to roll around so oh well.

Re: Ear Cleaning Issues

The only time I have an issue with continually dirty looking ears we've got yeast in 'em and need to see the vet for medicine.

Re: Ear Cleaning Issues

Is odor associated with yeast? Her ears don't stink to me..

And I'm with TibetanFan - What is the right way to clean a dog's ears?

Re: Ear Cleaning Issues

Sometimes there is a mild odor, not stinky per se. When cleaning ears, I usually flush them and let the dog shake out any excess followed by wiping any gunk visible in the external canal and extra moisture with a cotton ball. To flush the ear, you fill it right up with the ear cleaner and gently massage directly under the ear to loosen debris in the canal. Never probe around in there with anything, only clean with a cotton ball what is readily visible in the canal. It is relatively easy to tell with a quick swab by the vet whether or not you're dealing with an infection, yeast or otherwise.
