hand stripping?

i'm going to learn eventually how to do this, but i was just curious about why it needs to be done like that? i mean, will something bad happen to the dog if you clipper it? i understand for the breed to look like it should it should be hand stripped, but i work in a grooming salon already, and we rarely have dogs come in and go out looking "like they're suppose to" KWIM?

Re: hand stripping?

Hand stripping is done to keep the coats of certain terrier breeds, such as Irish Terriers, Scottish Terriers, and other, the correct harshness. While many pet terriers are just clipped, doing so changes the coat texture and the coat mats much more easily than if it was hand-stripped.

If you can learn proper hand-stripping from and experienced terrier person, go for it. It would give you a marketable skill.

Re: hand stripping?

I am available to teach the art of hand stripping. Now I just wish I could find that bumper sticker that say's " I strip for Dog Shows" LOL There are very few people who still hand strip correctly. Too many use a 20 blade to do flat work and use the thinning shears for short cuts. I was taugh by a terrier handler, who believes in doing it correctly the old school way. She is a brillant groomer.
