Fleas

I'm a first time dog owner, so I am in dry land here. Last night, my 3month old Zoe had a bunch of fleas on her... I'd never seen them before. So we quickly got her in the bath. What advice can you give me in flea prevention 101 for pups?

Re: Fleas

Frontline is one of the best things that I have found as far as treatment and prevention. You can get it from your local veterianarian.

I give the dog a thorough flea bath and spray him with a residual spray after the bath to get rid of most of the fleas, especially if he has a large infestation; then after a 24 hour period I will apply the frontline.

Clean your house as thoroughly as you can especially in the areas that the pup is in most. And get a good residual type spray for those areas as well; Frontline has a good one for that too. But I think BioSpot, and some of the other ones work just as well, if applied properly.

Re: Fleas

Try using a shampoo with Neem oil - it'll help with the flea bites. Your vet can recommend a spray which you apply all over your house to kill the larvae and any fleas hanging around. One flea can lay 100,,000 egss at a time so you have to be conscientious and careful about getting all surfaces.

Re: Fleas

It really depends on how old your pup is and how much it weighs. I would call your vet first for advice.

And the rest depends on where you live...is it a flea prone area or a relatively dry climate where fleas are a spotty occurrence?

Re: Fleas

please get your dog on a monthly flea treatment! program, advantage, any of the monthly treatments.

i once had a roommate who didn't treat her cat for fleas and when I got back from a vacation the house was infested with fleas so bad I spent one night in there and had bites covering me head to toe. we had to have the house fumigated it was so bad.

so please please get your dog treated every month!

Re: Fleas

Thanks everyone! We applied frontline on her last night. And I didn't know about cleaning the house, what should I use on the couch, etc.??
