HELP! My puppy had a derby demolition in the sitting room!

I left the puppy in the sitting room for about 10 minutes, and when I came back she had bitten open a shoe polishing product and it had stained the new carpet, it had pooed all over the floor and worst of all it had ripped a bit down the side of our new Chocolate leather sofas. And ripped up basically all the magazines in there.

What should I do?
My dad almost killed her (Lol!)
And I felt like doing the same
My puppy just wont stay calm for 5 minutes

Re: HELP! My puppy had a derby demolition in the sitting room!

Sounds like you need to puppy proof your home, first off. It's the same as baby proofing. Get on your knees and crawl around, looking at things from the dog's view. How in the world was shoe polish within the dog's reach anyway?

Beyond that, it's a puppy...think of this as a very long babysitting job. You can't leave a baby alone on the floor for 10 minutes, right? If there's going to be some time when you can't supervise the puppy, consider giving it a treat or toy to play with in its crate until you come back.

With all the new stuff in that room, maybe it's not the best place for your puppy at all right now.

Two pieces of equipment, along with some patience during the training period while pup learns you won't give in, will solve this problem for you. They are
(1) a Crate, and (2) an Ex-pen.

Ye I know but the thing is no toy keeps her occupied for to long.
And errr.
In my house we have one of those sink things you can push around
but its like a silver framed sink and it has cleaning materials on the bottom of it.
And I over exaggerated I left her in there just while I went to get changed
Which was only about 5 minutes

And now you know why you never leave a puppy unsupervised, be it for 1 minute or 5 or 10, unless they are safely contained. If you have to run to the bathroom, the pup either goes with you or is put in a crate.

The damage this puppy has done isn't the pup's fault--it is yours for leaving it loose and unsupervised. It is a BABY, and it needs to be supervised at all times or safely contained in a crate or kennel or ex-pen.

1. Puppy and calm shouldn't be in the same sentence together.
2. A new leather sofa + a new puppy = new gray hair. Seriously though. We were going to get a new sofa until Sandy came along. I've been through the teething thing before, so we decided to wait on the giant chew toy...I mean sofa. How old is your pup? It's only gonna get worse if she hasn't actually started teething yet. That's when the real fun begins. I tell my stepdaughter all the time, if you leave it down, she'll chew it up. It doesn't matter what it is. You really need to work on getting the stuff up though. I think a lot of pups are given up to shelters for behaviors like this, when in reality we haven't done our jobs as owners "puppy-proofing". And if you have to go and change, crate her. It sux to here her whine, but would probably suck even more to hear your parents talk about getting rid of her.

Re: HELP! My puppy had a derby demolition in the sitting room!

The thing is with young puppies...they can't be left alone unsupervised for even 30 seconds. In that 30 seconds, they are able to focus on the object that you care most about in that room...and demolish it. That's the way with puppies. They need to be crated even if you leave the room to go pee. When I got my youngest dog, at first he was NEVER NEVER NEVER left in a room alone. Because...if I left the room to get a drink from the kitchen, he'd either start shredding the newspaper I was reading, start chewing on my NEW shoes or pee on my couch. If he was feeling particularly ambitious he would pee AND poop on my couch. If the puppy is out of the crate they need to be literally attached to your hip. If they can't be, then in the crate they go. That is the only way to keep your belongings safe AND more importantly keep the puppy safe. A crate is a WONDERFUL investment. It will pay for itself a million times over when it comes to how much stuff WON'T be destroyed by your puppy.

Don't forget the exercise! Your pup needs at least two long walks a day. Not just a game of fetch in the backyard, mind you. Real, high speed walking. A tired dog is a good dog

I put a leash on my beltloop when my pup is being freaky and I am preoccupied doing something else..she is leashed unless she has my undivided attention. Good luck with your pup.

Ty all for your advice, peicing it all together I've come up with a few rules to set myself.

1. NEVER leave my puppy unsupervised
2. ALWAYS keep a good eye on her
3. If I have my attention to something else Ex.(Newspaper) then I MUST put her in here crate, cage, area.

xD!

I think you got it. She will still be a puppy, and have accidents and mishaps, but these three things will prevent any major catastrophes.
