Err. My dogs kinda to playful

Every time I give my puppy Phoenix a bath, she never sits down or rests and jumps all over the place. In the end I have to hold her collat and shower and bath her down.
She always seems so keen to jump out and play.
Anyone got any tips for me?

Baxter's the same way. It's normal.

I bought a simple product to help with bath time. It has two leashes with suction cups on the ends. Stick the suction cups to the side of the tub and hook the leashes onto the pup's collar and they can't do too much jumping.

The puppy also might feel less anxious if you were more "in" the tub...I assume you're kneeling outside the tub with your arms reaching in? Consider sitting on the side of the tub with your feet inside it. A tub probably looks and feels very strange to a puppy and having you right in there with him might make it seem less scary.

Re: Err. My dogs kinda to playful

you just described 90% of puppies. hate to say it, but this is generally what they are like at first. very few sit back and accept it the first time. the biggest thing is your attitude. you need to make sure you are calm. dongt do any baby talk during the bath, all it does is get dogs more excited. what the top post said is sorta right. try and find a way to tie the dog into the tub. they will still thrash around and could still hurt themselves so you still will probably need to hold him, but it just makes it a little bit easier. or try bathing with a leash on.

do not get in the tub. the dog will not feel less anxious, in fact it will make the problem worse. when you put yourself on the dogs level, they will always have the upperhand. a horse trainer told me something that has helped me immensely with dogs. you cannot physically manipulate a dog, most are too strong, and the small ones can break so easily that you shouldnt even try. the best way to accomplish anything with a difficult dog is to get to them emotionally/mentally. now if you get in the tub with your dog, you are sending a message that you are equal to him, which in dog world means he doesnt have to respect you. however, if you keep the dog in the tub, and you remain on the outside, you are sending a message that you are in control. just this one thing alone can help a lot.

in the mean time, the best way to get him over the playfulness is to keep doing it, and to keep making it clear that this is not playtime. you dont have to give him a full bath everytime, maybe you just hose him off on a hot day in the tub, or you brush him in the tub, or just leave him in there and pet him

Re: Err. My dogs kinda to playful

A groomer wouldn't make any money if they didn't charge for what they do. Snoopy is the same way and he is small enough that is just easier to put a foot stool in the tub and sit on it and have my mom give him a bath by spraying him with the shower head while I hold him.

Re: Err. My dogs kinda to playful

Kari has had LOTS of baths in her little time here because she always manages to get poop and pee all over her What I found worked the best was have a leash/collar on her (I used a kennel lead but you have to be very careful with those because they tighten as the dog pulls back) and just sat in the tub with her. It was pretty gross but it was a lot easier than to fight with her jumping out of the tub, eating the shower curtain and then getting poop smeered on the side of the tub ahhh puppys lol. I'm not sure if they've got petsmart in the uk but there prices are reasonable and for a bath its not a big deal, here in the us it'd be like 15 bucks for a puppy, not sure how much in england or the translation to pounds. Generally dogs don't need a lot of baths though so thats a god send if your dog isn't like mine lol.
