Using a Blow Dryer

Hello everyone!

My dog loves taking a bath. But in order to avoid having wet sofas I always blow dry his hair after bath. I noticed lately that my dog has falling hair!!! So, I'm wondering if just like humans, blow drying everyday is also not good for my dog.

Re: Using a Blow Dryer

You say "blow drying everyday"...does this mean you are bathing your dog daily? What i have always been told is that bathing too often can strip your dogs skin and coat of its natural oils. This could be causing the coat to look and feel different.

It is best to bath say once weekly or fortnightly (depending on your dogs breed, needs etc...) and use a oatmeal based shampoo which will keep the skin/coat's natural oils.

If you're using a hairdryer meant for humans, I hope it has a button to cut off the heat. These dryers are not good for dogs, and can cause injury.

Dogs shed, some more than others. What breed of dog do you have?

I couldn't agree more. Any dryer that you or a groomers shop uses Has to have a No Heat dryer. There have been serious injuries regarding heat/drying and furkids.

I bath mine every 2wks. They need to build up some oil in their coats just like us and our hair. It's soo easy to dry them out.

Re: Using a Blow Dryer

What type of dog do you have?

A dog with fur shouldn't be washed more than once a month, a dog with hair shouldn't be done more than once every 2 weeks. What are you using for shampoo? If its flea/tick stuff or human or soap that could be why... If you're using a human dryer thats a big no-no. Dogs should only use force or fluff dryers that are made specifically for them. I bought a low powered fluff dryer for my border collie way back when for about $40. It was well worth it, it helped get her undercoat out and dry her 10 times faster. A dryer with heat can cause injuries and burn your dogs coat to a crisp.

If your dog has fur and fur is just coming out it could just be normal shedding, a dog with hair it probably is from over bathing/using a hair dryer.
