Question Newbie - Pet-somethings Question

I am wanting to get into grooming. I would like to start part-time but have been unable to find anything yet. I spoke to 1 lady yesterday who has had an ad up for quite some time. She seemed like she had no interest in teaching me and told me someone else came in so she's going to try her. Why not just tell me you aren't interested?? Anyway...I am wondering if I were to go full-time at a Pet-something how much do they usually start you at? And it's usually a 1 year contract?

I sure appreciate any responses. As well as ideas of where else to start.
Thank you!

Re: Newbie - Pet-somethings Question

there are schools you can pay for and learn to groom. I do some grooming on my own. But really want to go to this school.
Most groomers don't really have the time to teach in a busy shop setting. And don't want you praticing on customers dogs. Because I am sure she has experianced this time and time again, you get someone trained and then they leave. Yes, she could make you sign a years contract, but those are hard to enforce.

Re: Newbie - Pet-somethings Question

if you have no experiance in grooming or working with dogs,i highly recommend you apply to places as a bather brusher, not an untrained groomer. you may find that this job is not right for you. it is very messy and very physically demanding.

when i first started, i worked for petsomething. petco has a one year contract if you go to grooming school, petsmart is 3 years. if you quit or get fired before the contraxct is up, you owe them the roughly 2grand for school. how good the school is depends on the area, some places have great instructors, some have terrible ones.

again i stress getting a p/t job as a bather brusher first. petsomethings are always hiring, and if you are serious, always need people who wont quit after a week. you have to apply online for both and then call the manager and basically bug them for an interveiw. you will find that if you work as a b/b and you have experianced groomers in the salon, you will learn a lot by just watchng them. i know that petco also has an apprenticeship program, where the grooming manager takes time out of the day to train you and all that.

just be weary of petsomethings, there are great groomers, but some stores have so many internal problems, that they get away with a lot of things. go there and talk to the grooming staff. the best way to get a job there is to impress the grooming salon manager, they have the final say in whoever gets hired in there

Re: Newbie - Pet-somethings Question

trust me the job is a LOT harder than it looks, start out as a partime brusher/bather and watch the grooming staff, I used to have to do a lot for the groomers (brushouts, etc) and help them finish dogs and I learned a lot about blades, etc.
