Shedding Comb 4 Pup.. Too Soon?

Hi All

As most of you may or may not know, We are getting our sheltie pup in 9 days. I want Lassie to start getting used to things soon after she gets settled in to her new home. Since Lassie's Fur is new and still coming in do you think it would be too soon to start combing her with a shedding comb?

My last sheltie had a fear of the comb and would only tolerate a brush. Even if I had started with a brush and sneek swapping to a comb she would know. So that is why I would like to start early with Lassie. But since she will only be 9 weeks when we get her I wonder if I should wait a month and let her fur come in more and use a brush or do you think it would be ok right off the bat?

It's been 14 yrs since my last sheltie so some the minor details I have forgotton.

What sort of shedding comb do you have?

I actually dont like to much undercoat pulled out of a rough collie or a sheltie - well groomed yes - but not so much that there is no undercoat.

I would get a grehound comb (just google them they are not for greyhounds despite the name)

Short sessions on grooming everyday - 2 x 5 minute sessions everyday. Up on a small non slip table be patient and careful - dont attempt the whole dog just bits at a time until shes comfortable - when adult a weekly full groom plus everyday combing of behind ears, armpits, groin and trousers to keep matt free.

Remember to reward the good and at this early stage ignore the bad - if the pup does misbehave too much just correct with an ahah sound, then carry on.
